Hey there fellow Gen 2 Prius owners. I have a 2004 Prius with 108,000 miles on it. The MFD is starting to spaz out and work intermittently. It just started to stop working, would be listening to some music and all the sudden would die, no temp, no climate control, no avg mpg, no miles driven, no battery info, the base screen would be there without any data. So its sometimes there when I start the car and sometimes not, sometimes it dies and others it cames back. I called my local Toyota dealer they suggested I needed to replace the Multi-Function-Display with a refurb. Would only cost a mere $1300. I need a more affordable option and could prob do an install myself. Im wondering if there might even be a way to fix the glitch in my current unit... Any thoughts? Thanks!
cwerdna; try shineing bright flashlight into one of the corners of the display at night to detrmine if its simply the backlight thats out. If it is just backlight you should see faint images in display. If you do see images try to navigate to screen brightness adjustment and see if increasing brightness and or contrast has any effect. If using flashlight doesnt show faint display then the whole unit is not getting power
"My MFD works fine. Never had a problem with it, yet." I suspect epoch's suggestion may have been intended for the OP, rather than you.
For a talented DIY, just follow the great instructions by the Hobbit (link from cwderna above). I did, but bought a fine point soldering iron tip, fine solder (Old lead-tin formulation) and a solder flux pen from Mouser. Then using a mounted magnifying glass I re-soldered pin 60 successfully. - $31 For someone that is less talented (or less adventurous), Take your Prius to any car stereo shop and have them remove the MFD for you (your Prius is still driveable), Take the MFD and a printout of Hobbit's instructions to an electronic service tech with surface mount experience to be soldered, then back to the stereo shop for re-installation. - about $75 - $100 JeffD
I have a 2007 prius with an mfd with a part no 86110-47210-c0. It is a canadian model and I'm having some trouble tracking down a replacement for it. Can I use a 86110-47210? thanks
