1st time Prius owner and problem! I was traveling 25 mph and watching my mpg indicator with my foot off the gas pedal, it was around 25 mpg and not going to 100 mpg. I commented to my wife that something was weird when the whole dash went black for approx. 3 seconds. It has 390 miles total. I called my dealer asap and was told "see if it happens again" and "it's a large pc and sometimes it will glitch like your home computer". Should I be concerned or is this normal? I would hate for my wife to be stranded if it happened on her time. If I paid 26g's for my home computer, I'ld have the same concerns. thank you in advance.....
You should take your car back and get your money back and buy a Buick... LOL... Seriously, it's brand new car, they fix whatever is wrong with it and if it doesn't happen again nothing is wrong with it....
Buick .......naaaw! I had a Ferd f250 that made a loud bang twice when putting it in 4wd. Dealer looked at it with no findings..........3 years 3 months old and 17000 miles, a flatbed took my truck and $4500 to repair my 4wd. I wished that I could of got a "redo over" card......
Actually.....this is no problem at all. It's what I used to call an "Undocumented Feature" and it reminds new G3 drivers to concentrate on driving their new car for a few tanks and get used to it before they start to experiment with pulse and glide, and stealth gliding, and when to use B mode. No? Oh. OK. Well here's the good news. Wait for it to happen again. If/when it does then take the car in to the stealer and make sure that the problem is documented. Toyota does not have a very good warranty....but they DO have a warranty! You're in Ohio....so sorry. No CARB extension for you AFAIK. BUT..... If you document this problem in the first 3yrs/36,000 of ownership? Toyota is on the hook to fix it. In some states...if they try to fix it and try to fix it and try to fix it and try to fix it and they don't fix it? Then you can get some form of settlement under whatever your state has for a "lemon law." Mostly? You can engage whatever Toyota uses for a Customer Care service in North America...but you're not there yet. So...RELAX. Enjoy the car! Don't worry too much about the MFD. Even when it's working...the fuel gauge doesn't report the bottom 20-percent of your tank, the reported MPG is off by +5 to 10 percent, and you don't even get a temperature gauge!
LOL, 26 g's for home computer! that was funny. no, it is not normal, but i agree, see if it happens again. there can be an anomoly from time to time. mpg's won't go to 100 unless ice shuts off. screen shouldn't go blank tho. if you don't get any warning lites, all they can do is check for codes. if there are no codes, they can't fix anything. could be a loose connection, did you hit a bump?
Bisco, if you remove your foot completely from the gas pedal, doesn't it always go up to 100 mpg on the gauge? Thanks for all the comments and will watch it for awhile. Irac had better roads after "shock & awe" than Ohio so, hitting a bump when it happened is very likely though I don't remember. I have morphed from Jeff to Ruth Gordon since this purchase! lol
Not if it is still warming up, or if the climate control has taken too much heat out of the previously warm engine, or the traction battery is down to two bars and needs to recharge. But this car does not have an OS similar to a home computer, and should not glitch in a similar fashion.
i think if the engine is running, it doesn't. someone correct me if i'm wrong. if it's warming up, it won't shut off and there are a few other reasons. edit: fuzzy beat me to it!
If you have the time, I would bring it in (schedule an appointment), and have them look it over and more importantly document the anomaly. That way if it MFD craps out (which has happened to a few members here) after the warranty is up, you might have a case to get it repaired.
I should learn not to use that "always" word. The dealer's service dept. didn't offer that option so, that's why I posted here. I've been reading lots of great stuff on this board and didn't want to over-react.
egg all over my face! Just like the first time I was traveling under a train trestle and yep....it happened again. I turned around and went under it again 2x and the dash dims so much , at a glance, you would think it cut out. The dash light must automatically adjust in low light situations. Duhhhh
