In a couple of weeks my wife and I are moving from Illinois to a place called Yuba city California . I have never heard of the place , have you? What's it like? Is there a city or town within 20 minute drive we would be better off looking at ? I seem to remember reading here that there are some prius gatherings in California , How do I find out about them ? I would love to go ! We presently lives in a small town (Population 4200 ) with one stoplight , but a 20 minute drive from here there's a large city that has four stop lights !!! And a Walmart ! Lol . I have lived here for 20 years I hear California might be different.
Sounds like a nice area north of Sacramento. My brother used to own investment property in the area about 25 years ago. Like most areas of CA, learn where your natural gas & water shutoffs are and keep the necessary wrenches nearby in case of earthquake.
Yuba City has a good size Sikh population from India. It would be a culture shock for you and they are very nice folks. Is your Prius CA emission certified ?
Check out the tiny town of Rough & Ready, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains toward Nevada City. It would involve a commute, but would get you out of the flat land.
Every Prius is CA emissions certified, matter of fact, every car sold in the US since about 1985 meets CARB requirements.
Be cautious if you ever venture down to Southern California, your head may explode due to culture shock.
I was in the Air Force at Beale AFB near there. It is nice if you like small town living. Winters are mild with no snow compared to Illinois. Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and Sacramento are within driving distance. I didn't hear anything about Sikhs when I was there. That wouldn't be a concern for me. They are peaceful people. I would live there.
Lots of info on Wikipedia but then you already know that. Yuba City, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 36 miles down highways 70/65 to Costco and a major Galleria shopping center in Roseville. Twice a month would be very worth while. Summers are hot but humidity is low so 90 isn't bad.
I live 30 miles from Yuba City and have been there many times. Haven't noticed a large Sikh presence or effect on the local culture even though I know there are a lot of Sikhs there. I wasn't there on a festival day though. I agree that they are good people and would expect them to have a good effect on a community. OP. There are some pretty bad areas in and around town, before you settle in one place, be sure to drive through on a Friday/Saturday night and see what's going on in the neighborhood.
I would normally say, "I hope you like to pay taxes" but since you're moving from Illinois, the taxes will be about the same.
I'm in that area all the time for work and shuttling our son back and forth to CSU Chico. Yuba City is known for its Sikh population, lots of white trash and chickens on the highway intersection. Ohh and meth! Sorry to paint a bad picture but around here it is not known as a nice place to live. Its proximity to Marysville and uggggg Olivehurst make it even worse. There are lots of big lifted diesel pickups with smog delete packages so keep your windows up when driving by one. On the other hand, you are pretty close to Sacramento and all of the wonderful recreational opportunities the Sierra Nevada foothills have to offer. Check out Auburn. It's the unofficial endurance capital of the world.
