I went in today my prius has 50K miles and owned for 3 years. It is a 2010 Prius 4 and the Service center stated that the brake calipers froze and casued the rear brake pads to be worn down and I needed 2 new rear rotars. So all in all, I needed a new Brake Caliper - $400, 2 new rotars for $105 each, and brake pads for $289. It is going to cost me about $900 and this seems very high and unreasonable? Is this fair price or am I getting ripped off?
I wouldn't think your caliper would be seized at such low mileage. I'd get another opinion. SPH-D710 ? 2
It's over $600 in parts from Toyota. Did they just try to push the piston in? Prius rear caliper pistons must be screwed in. SPH-D710 ? 2
That is insane prices for the parts. Here's a good site for aftermarket parts: 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS Brake/Wheel Hub Parts Reman calipers $150; Rotors $40 ea (premium); pads $20-50 depending on brand +shipping. You can also find a 5% off coupon. I would find another shop, or if you are handy pick up a manual and have at it!
I went in because the it sounded like the brakes were locked on the rear passenger tire. It sounded like metal on metal and I knew something was wrong with the brakes - I just can't believe it will cost this much to get it fixed.
well, at least you know they weren't pulling your chain. frozen brake calipers is pretty strange. i would get a second opinion on the price from a triple A service shop or someone you trust, just to be sure. why only one caliper if they are both frozen?
