curious what you paid for it

 

$4000? I guess.
In Chicago, a cab guy posted a 04 with 300K miles on craigslist and asking for $5300, a while ago. I don't know how much it was sold. But to me it does not worth that much. You can find many 04's at $7000 level with 150K miles. Plus, taxi are the toughest use of cars in all kind of ways. Not only I will worry about hybrid components, but those regular mechanical stuff could also at end of life stage. I would rather buy a highway driven car at 400K miles than a taxi.

i figure if engine or tranny goes out 600 for engine/tranny, fluid, belts, ect

if hv battery goes out 1200 for 3rd gen batteries

both can be done in a week with my tools and 10,000lb car lift

i will still have less money and maybe about 100-150k miles on engine and better batteries for less money than most can get a prius at

 

Great! I think that's the right car for you, if you can take care of those regular repairs. I wish I have that skills, tool and the workshop to have such fun.

 

Well, I finally made it to the 299,999 club yesterday. Actually my son did it for me as he and some friends took the Silver Bullet to Florida for Spring Break. Must be nice lol. What an awesome vehicle this car has been, mainly maint. fluids, filters and tires mainly!! The combo meter has acted out a few times recently so that one will get addressed soon. And of course both HID bulbs were replaced within the last year and a yellow top Optima a few years back. A Scan Gauge II, KT stiffening plate, rear bumper cover and a little window tint are on the add ons I can think of.

Congrats! My 04 have a long way to go to join this club Only 178K now. But it is just like others, trouble free, except burn some oil, which actually means, I will change oil less often due to the dilution effect.

Engine was replaced at 400k but original battery. I drove about a half mile yesterday with all green bars before the indicator dropped straight to 2 bars. Im guessing a new battery will be the next job. So far the car still runs decently and no issues from the battery other than the quick drop in charge. Averaging about 43 mpg at highway speeds.

 

That's the first Prius with hybrid battery passing half million mark!
Do you mostly drive on freeway? Did you change other mechanical stuff such as bearing? Do you feel the body stiff compare to when mileage was low?

 

I replaced one rear bearing(hub assembly) a long time ago. Ive also replaced the blower motor, the radiator/condenser fan assembly, drivers side motor mount, outer tie rod ends, ball joints, and a couple other small things like bulbs. The dash stuck at 299,999 so replaced that soon after. Im on the second set of struts and third set of shocks.

I drive more than 90% of the time at 70-75 mph.

Lately the car has had a couple of issues come up. The electric mirrors only work sometimes. Not a big deal. and the top right controls on the steering wheel no longer work. They used to work with the wheel half turned but not anymore. Also Led brake lights on drivers side are dim.

 

A little update...I had the combo meter blank out a few times before the 299999 mark so I had Toyota do the warranty extension on the combo meter. Took it in on a Tuesday and got it back on a Thursday. What
they did on the odometer was to put a little sticker on the door jam saying the car has 306K miles on it and they reset my main odometer back to zero. It sure looks weird seeing on 324 miles on my car now. I'm not real happy about that, I thought they would be able to set my mileage at 306K and I could keep adding to it. BOO Toyota!! lol This that all they can do on the '05's??

Hi and I apologize if I'm not reading 36 pages ofpost to find an answer to my question and rely on memories of other readers.

My question is: does the 299999 issue apply also on Jap & Eur MY05 Prius, which do not have miles but Km?

My 05 prius is now at 240.000 km.

When I was first in the market to buy my first Prius, I went to AutoTrader to see what was out there.

What I did on the site was first hit the tab "any distance", then "$4500.00 or less"

96 Prii came up on the site.

Some had 350,000 miles plus on them, some were in bad cosmetic shape, some 01-02, but most were Gen II.

What really stood out on viewing this site with the limited cost cap was that of all the vehicles posted, not ONE said stuff like "mechanics special", or "needs work".

Funny tho, a few of the sellers actually apologized for the mileage, but insisted the car they were selling was sound. ( and I believed them)

That's what convinced me to buy a Prius... Or two,,,,

I just did the same search, only found 7 listings, of which 2 are Gen II. One of them is front damaged. My search is also years later than yours, which means your $4500 limit should equivalent to $3500 now, but I am a generous man. How could you get 96 result? And most of them are even Gen II?

Oh, what's the gas price when you did search? Today in Chicago gas price is $4.25 in suburban area, by the way...

 

No Um.... lier(?). Did the search about a year ago. That's what came up. You do nation wide search?

 

I was kidding. The point is, when gas price goes up as we all predicted, a lot less used Prius available on market.

 

Reading this part of the forum as convinced me not to trade my 62,000 gen 2 in for a 20,000 mile gen 3 . The total cost of the trade would pay the difference in fuel efficiency between the two models with comparative ease given that the model is capable of such high mileages. It makes sound economic sense to buy a almost fully depreciated gen 2 with 100,000 miles on its clock and drive it around for another 20 years at the current rates of vehicle inefficiency. I expect the cost of fuel is bound to increase and the efficiency of vehicles will further increase meaning that the future calculations would shorten economical ownership to around 10 years.at 17,000 miles a year.
Of course, problem is most likely to be getting bored of driving the same vehicle.

 

At 327k on my 06, my total cost of ownership is $0.17 per mile. This does not include insurance.
A phenomenal deal. I'll be buying a V this fall.

 

And is that cost of ownership considering your '06 to be worth $0? I would imagine it still is worth a little bit.

 

Assuming your car depreciated $20K, that contribute to about 6 penny/mile. Your operation cost is about $0.11/mile, including maintenance and repairs, excluding gas, insurance. That's about perfect.
Any major repairs? Struts and shocks? Bearings?
