i agree that this is a personal decision. even though i want a spare, i haven't bought one after almost a year. we take our hycam to florida every winter, and i wouldn't do it without a spare. i mostly use the pip for commuting and around town errands, but if i got a flat 50 miles from home, a spare would be a nice convenience vs other options. ymmv. it would be great if toyota made it a reasonably priced option in the future, or even an aftermarket company. my stroller days are over unless grandchildren beome a reality!:p

I have finally solved the space problem. I built another shelf above my spare which now lies flat in the trunk. Any suitcases will still fit on the shelf. This also made room for some of the small stuff I
carry, spare battery, small inverter etc. Now the rear seat is again totally free.

Nice! Do you have any pictures? I'm wondering if it will fit a full size bag of golf clubs.

I put a repair kit in my trunk:
    Tubeless Tire Repair Kit
    Tire Inflator
    Mini pliers
    Rubber gloves

Got the PIP yesterday, got the 2010 spare today, $63 with tax. Its basically brand new, who ever uses a spare :) It will sit on a shelf except when I go on longer trips. Ordered a nice cover for it from Amazon, it will keep other stuff back there clean.

    I don't have a Pip, so I didn't vote.

As a Motorcycle rider, I'm hip to the idea of going out into the big bad world sans spare however (comma!!) when I do ride...I always file a flight plan with my CFO and I have a rescue vehicle dialed in and I have AAA with the R/V (MC) rider.
I also have plugs, slime, a micro compressor, CO2 bottles...etc and so far I'be been lucky. I holed one tire (on the V-Rod) and I was able to come home under my own steam.
Having said alllllllllllll that there is no way that I would ever drive a car....even a Prius-sized car, without a spare.
    No way...
    No Day.
To me it's a fundamental piece of safety equipment....and I would dang well make sure that I had a spare if I lived in an urban area since you really don't get to chose where you break down!!!!

    That's just how I roll.
People don't plan to fail, but sometimes they fail to plan.
Obviously people can and do drive without them, and the Slime kits will indeed take care of most of the tire emergencies that you're going to run into, and the motor clubs and Big Al the tow truck driver has to make his (or her) coin too.
I liked the kit that another poster put together that included a headlamp, pliers, Slime, and rubber gloves. I'd think about adding some reflective triangles and/or strobes as well.
    Distracted drivers... :(

    It's YOUR car so...
    Your call. :)

Folks who are planning on buying one (like me).Either:
    1) Check ebay!
    2) call local used auto part places/junkyards. they often stock them!
Either way, just be sure you buy the right size. cost should be ~$100 or less for a donut spare.

We also have a link in FAQ to search a national database of junk yards (though obviously it's not 100% coverage)

Got one delivered from Tirerack yesterday. Not a spare though, it's a real Goodyear Assurance ($93) like came with the car mounted on an inexpensive ($56) wheel Tirerack says is for the 2012 PIP. With mounting, balancing and shipping came to $170 total. My 2010 Prius once had a bad bubble that Toyota said wasn't safe and it took them two days to get a replacement. I figure my new "spare" can stay in the garage to be used if ever needed. Being the exact same tire as currently on this car, if one ever does need replacing at least I won't have to wait for Toyota to get. I already have it! And can easily be taken on long trips for extra piece of mind. A little more than an ebay/junk yard spare but I feel much better now having the real thing.

    OI I
I've gotten two flats (nails) now with my pip. In the space of two months. Both times while just leaving from work to go home the tpms indicator went on immediately. Needed to get towed both times. Tire repair kit is worthless.

So I'm planning to get a spare donut, but I'll leave it at my office. I live about 45 miles from home. It won't help if I get a blowout halfway from home, but that's what AAA is for.

What if you get a flat when you are half way home and the spare is at the office?

I just edited my post to answer the exact same question! Just saw your post.

In that case I'm out of luck. But in my years of commuting from sf to sj, almost always I find a flat while just leaving to go home from work.

I believe golf clubs are made to order according to a persons size, correct? Try it and see.

i believe the hatch area gets wider as you go up, so clubs should fit fine, at an angle.
