It has hit the Prius world in Dallas. I couple weeks ago I had all my airbags ripped on in the middle of the night.
The thugs disabled the alarm from within the driver door handle (I filed a formal compaint with Toyota.) Upon picking up my car the body shop guy said there were 6 in the shop for the same issue... My poor car was destroyed on the inside with only 15k miles on it :( Anyways, the body shop still can't get the auto unlock to work right. I'm upgarding to an after market alarm. Any suggestions will be welcomed! I want the kind that rings inside my condo so I can go out side a blow the brains out of these jerks... which is totally legal in Texas! We get our cars broken into a lot, but the airbags, my gosh. Total cost of repairs, over 6k.

    Wow, that sucks!
Didn't think there would be that much of a demand for Prius airbags?
Is there really any alarm system thieves can't disable?

yes. yes i do. it's a pretty affluent neighborhood and we have daily break-ins. cops don't patrol this area because they are always in the ghetto. i'm just happy to live in texas where we can basically gun down anyone for theft.

Get a good alarm and park in a well light place that is busy and perhaps near video surveillance

That stinks. I remember my apartment getting robbed in West LA when I was in my twenties. Very frustrating. I didn't buy a gun just moved to a upper middle class suburb

    Sorry to hear that.
I used to live in a very nice condo in San Diego. My home and about 20 others were burglarized the same day.
Police basically filed reports and nothing else. I felt very helpless. I understand the frustration.

They didn't go off, they were removed. The airbags plug in like a monitor plugs into a computer. They are expensive to replace, backorded, and take forever to ship because they are considered "explosive devices."

I just want to make sure everyone is aware of the alarm system faults, and the demand for these parts. Like I said in the first post, there were 6 Prius with the airbags stolen at the shop near my house this week.

I'd be suspicious of the body shop with the 6 Prii in there for the same thing. It wouldn't hurt to give the police a heads up. Trust no one!!!

hmmm.... you would think the dealership wouldn't want this in their own body shop, but you have a good point.

Granted, a dealership would be most unlikely but you never know. Does your dealer have it's own body shop or do the use a recommended one?

What I meant, that if a Prius gets in a reck and the airbags go off then it would probably be totaled. There wouldn't be a market for your airbags, just saying.

There are many crash scenarios that involve just a couple of airbags at a time, so maybe it's not as it appears.

There has been enough of an airbag replacement market on other cars to drive this sort of theft ever since airbags were mandated. Why would the Prius be exempt?

Even worse, this demand has also led to a supply of counterfeit replacement airbags.
