I figured out how to get the text message function to work on my head unit. It was a setting on my iPhone, under Bluetooth it was the "show notifications". Then all of a sudden bam any texts I get while in the car pop up and the HU will read them aloud, also there are a bunch of quick responses. Anyways don't know if anyone else got it figured out but figured I would post it just in case.
For crying out loud, I was wondering why my texts had suddenly stopped working. After some unreliability since the upgrade from iOS 6.1.1 to 6.1.2 I made the car and phone forget each other, then repaired them. Texts haven't worked since, because of this setting. Thanks for the tip lachrisb, and welcome to Priuschat to both of you. Although our headunit is totally different down here, it professes to have similar functionality. I have found that the car is unable to send text messages, even those quick responses. I'm not sure if this is the car or the phone, but I suspect the phone. Let me know if you find that those responses work or don't work.
Hmm... Yeah I can respond to txts via the HU. I tried it out this morning. It is a little bit slow though. I can type a lot faster on the iPhone then on the HU haha or make Siri write for me.
Thanks for pointing out this setting! Sadly in Canada the functionality it enables is completely useless! All that happens is a banner pops up on the screen saying "new text message". No way to have it read or quick reply or anything. Not sure what the benefit is over a just the incoming message noise on the phone!
Be careful using this feature. Having the car read the wrong text message with the wrong person in the car can be awkward or worse.
On the Australian HU you can configure this. Mine's set to pop up a screen that says I have message and who it is from, but I have auto-read turned off. From the screen I can choose to hear the message read out, call the person or just dismiss it.
From what I've read the actual listing of messages doesn't work with iPhones, so I'm technically out of luck. That said, since my phone is connected via Bluetooth i can just trigger Siri anyway. Would be nice if they made it so you could trigger Siri from the steering wheel. I know future models might support it, but it's not exactly worth rebuying a car for a software update.
It does if you've upgraded to iOS6. You can't browse existing messages, but new messages should come through.
Weird. I've had ios6 about as long as I've had the car and the car messages area continues to show empty. Aside from turning on "show notifications" in iOS Bluetooth settings is there anything else I needed to do to enable it?
That's all I did on the phone. Our HU in Australia is different from yours so I can't make suggestions there.
woo! messages did finally start coming in! i think my misunderstanding was that i thought it would bring in any texts post ios6, when what it does is only bring in new messages per trip. so each trip starts out showing no messages. thanks to everyone who helped me sort it out
