sure. in a regular prius, the first start of the day is wherever it was at the end of the last drive. in the pip, everytime you plug in, when you get down to the hv portion, it starts at full. and then, there are the few times when you regen to full and can keep regenning, but not in the regular prius.

See Bisco's answer. I thought we were just talking about what the hybrid battery capacity bar graph shows. In my 2010 it hardly ever showed full bars. In the PIP, it will show full or near full bars when the EV capacity is first used up. As you sort of pointed out, the real question is how much actual capacity there is. It's my understanding the lithium battery is somehow denser and has more theoretical capacity, pound for pound, but that tends to be offset by the car makers using smaller, lighter lithium packs compared to their nickel packs. As you can tell, I claim no engineering expertise.

Sure the Li-ion battery is denser, but this isn't relevant. The designers have chosen a range of electrical capacity in terms of kilowatt-hours for HV mode

Regarding the HUD. The blurriness is due to my prescription glasses. Without the glasses the image is only blurred due to my poor eyesight but I can tell that it would be clear with normal vision. Both my clear glasses and my prescription sunglasses cause this blurred image.

I tried polarized sunglasses. That lasted all of 30 seconds. They washed out both the speedometer and the HUD displays.

Aye, my sunglasses are polarized. I can't remember if my regular glasses are but I think they are.

Yes, I agree and that's what I was obliquely referring to in my posts (what, you couldn't read my mind!?). I just don't know the actual numbers, so I didn't want to express any kind of technical opinion. Since Li-ion also holds its charge better than nickel, I was thinking that might be another contributing factor, but I defer to the techies on all of this. I may drain my battery this weekend and take a run on my favorite gliding path parkway, just to see what happens.

Do your clear lenses have the auto darkening feature? Wondering if that's where the polarization is coming from. Or maybe they just have a permanent polarized tint? (not even sure that's possible)

I don't have transition lenses (the darkening feature). My sunglasses have a polarizing layer built into them. I think I got it on my regular glasses too but I will have to look up my invoice.

    According to this article:
HowStuffWorks "Lithium-ion Vs. Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries"
Lithium-ion charges and discharge faster than NimH. So I would ASSume that there's less energy loss in regeneration similar to charging with L2 loses less kwh than with L1.

I would also ASSume that an empty battery recharges faster than a full one. With a 4.4 kwh capacity battery on the PiP, it will always be at a lower percent utilization when EV is used up than a standard Prius.

I will ASSume for a third time that with a higher curb weight the PiP receives more regen. I've noticed this with 4 people in the car. I can fill up the regen bar with much smaller brake pressure than just me alone.

And finally EPA for the PiP is 1 mpg higher than the standard Prius. Is that a combination of those three ASSumptions?

Odd thing happened yesterday. Driving home (50 miles) in freezing rain--My Radar Cruise control quit--error--"Needs Cleaning" or some such message. When I got home it was caked with ice. Anyone have this issue before? Is there any way to turn off the radar and have a standard CC--while you are moving?

Push the lever away from you instead of towards you. Took me a couple of days to figure it out.

No but it makes sense. If the radar can't see the car in front, it won't work (It is mentioned in the manual).

To expand on what F8L said, you have to choose "regular" CC before you set the speed. So, you'll have to turn off CC, turn it back on, then push away to engage regular CC and then set your speed.

No worries. We're all here to help one another :).

Oh, if you want to know which CC you're in, look at the icon. The regular CC will have just the speedo and an arrow icon. The DRCC will add a car to the speedo and arrow icon.

In the MID, DRCC will say "Radar Ready", the regular CC won't.

Lastly, note that the ACC/DECEL functions work differently in DRCC or CC mode.

$316 is a good price for a mod that gives a lot more functionality for your $40,000+ car.
