Maybe you guys can help me determine if I need a new cabin air filter? Haha. Swapped it and the engine air filter out today.
I've seen much, much worse. I would guess if you take it out and dump the leaves and acorns out once a month or so, it would last a lot longer.
Still not as bad as my friends 1999 Grand Am's engine air filter I took out in 2006 (she bought the car new and had brought it to the dealer for all the maintenance). It was the original and she brought the car to me wondering why it kept stalling and hesitated on acceleration So yeah, I'd say your cabin air filter is good for another 100,000!
I usually just wash my cabin air filter with soap and water, then stick it back in there. Still have the original. What do they want for them now, like 15-20 bucks a pop? They wash out just fine.
Short answer, yes. If you go to the trouble of pulling out the glove box and your filter looks like yours you should replace it rather than just shoving it back. I (like a previous poster) buy mine from Amazon for under $10.
Here is a photo of my cabin air filter made from air conditioning filter panel available at home depot. Total material cost per filter is probably less than $2.
Unfortunately for Gen III owners, the cabin air filter no longer sits in a tray, it's all one piece. Nice job, though.
Probably depends a lot on where you live. I live in a suburb of Chicago. When I check mine at about 9,000 miles it is dirty because of the polluted air. I use a Toyota filter. I think they are better and trap more dirt particles. Just my preference.
The change interval per the maintenance schedule is 30K miles, but you should check the filter once in a while and see if you are comfortable breathing through it, or not.
I checked mine after a year, ~18k miles, and found that I should replace it more often. Can you guess which is new?
Interesting. Are you sure the old one was white when new? Reason I ask is that some filters have activated charcoal impregnated on them, so they are gray right out of the box. iPhone ?
Just took a look at ours, at 43000~ km. Had a hard time telling which was the clean side. I've reverse-blown the dust off it once or twice, didn't even bother this time. More of a glove box tidy up chore.
