Our Walmart has both Mobile 1 and Quaker State available in 0w20 in the 5qt jug .... roughly $26/jug....

I was amazed they even had a fram oil filter cartridge.

Not to change the subject - but what are peoples thoughts on brands of oil filter?

 

I use Mobil-1 filters.
Just got back from the local Walmart, they had plenty of Mobil-1 0W-20 for just $24.97 for 5-qts.
Never saw the price so low! I did notice one change, Walmart does not seem to have the Mobil-1 filters in the store anymore, but they have Mobil-1 filters on-line.

Historically I was not a big fan of Walmart, but in Virginia it's been a life saver as the only "hardware" store close to our house. And I've learned they carry good stuff in general.

 

Mobil1 0w20 finally showed up at our local Walmart, at a bit over $10 Can per liter. Still, with the Toyota 0W20 costing only around $6 per liter, and because I'm there to pick up a Toyota filter anyway, I'll stick with Toyota brand oil.

FWIW, the oil change interval in Canada is still 8000 km (~5000 miles).

 

As far as I know, the Toyota synthetic is top tier quality so I agree with you, use the Toyota due to the cost advantage.

 

I keep one quart of Toyota synthetic 0-20 in the compartment below the rear carpet. Probrobly never need it, as I have routine maintenance done at Toyota.

 

My Costco (Melville, NY) has always had 0W20. It's interesting to read about why lots of cars specify 0W20. It has little to with what is good for the engine and is all about improving the EPA mileage rating. I will still use it, not wanting to know how cost ineffective it may be. I may try getting my oil tested after the warranty period to see how good the oil still is after 10K miles: Google blackstone-labs

As for what oil I carry in the car, I usually prefer Filippo Berio Extra Virgin and take it out of the trunk when I get home from the market.

 

My Scan Gauge II tells me if my oil pressure is low. So far so good at 16,000 miles.

Any respected oil brand full synthetic is good in 0W-20 multi viscosity weight.
Over the years in various cars I've used Royal Purple, Castrol Edge, Mobile 1, and Amsoil (the original synthetic oil). All have performed very well.

BTW, Porsches come with Mobil 1 and Porsche recommends it.

 

I leave the oil at home in the garage, in a 5q jug.

Here's the thing.
If you get your oil changed at the dealer, then saving a buck or two by buying a 5q jug isn't going to be your thing.
Just get a quart at the dealer the next time you change your oil.
That way, you have what's already in the engine.
That or go by an AutoZone type place and get a single quart of what's recommended for your car (probably 0w20 for a 2012 G3.)

It's the oil that's in the engine, not the oil in the bottle that's important!
If you check your oil every other time you fill up, then you're going to detect and correct any oil deficiencies before you have to add more and a fraction of a quart.....and you can wait and add that when you get home.
You should also check the level immediately after an oil change and again a few days later.

0w20.
Any brand will do.

And many who drive Porsches and are into the maintenance of them don't consider Mobil 1 to be the best oil available for a Porsche. The commercial link between Mobil Oil and Porsche has to be considered when valuing Porsche's endorsement.

I have been using Mobil 1 in all my cars since Mobil first put it on the market. Here is why: I was a fighter pilot in the Navy during Vietnam. My last duty was as a functional test pilot at the Naval Air Rework Facility in Pensacola, Florida. On one test flight, in an A-4 Skyhawk, I was at 40,000 feet about 125 miles south of the main field at Pensacola Naval Air Station. A hose (pipe) broke and I lost all my engine oil in about 15 seconds. The procedure was to set 92% RPM, about 27,000 RPM, and minimize stress on the engine until short final, and then s l o w l y reduce power to idle when the runway was made. I declared my emergency and returned to Sherman Field. It took 25 minutes to get back and, when the runway was made, I slowly reduced power to idle. The engine seized, stopping from 27,000 RPM to dead stop is about 2 seconds. It torqued the airframe about 45 degrees, from which I recovered and rolled out without an engine. When I asked the Pratt Whitney rep how I had been able to fly for 25 minutes with no oil he explained that the Navy jet aircraft used synthetic oil made by Mobil Oil. At that time it was not available for cars, but once it was I immediately changed my cars to Mobil 1. I had bought a Honda Accord when they were first brought to the US. After 11 months and 12,000 miles there was a recall because Honda had found that head bolts had not been tempered properly. As my wife and I waited in the waiting area a mechanic came out holding something in a large shop rag. He asked if the Accord was ours. He then showed us what was in the rag. It was our Cam Shaft. He wanted to know if we had changed the Cam, because when he cleaned it up it had absolutely no wear marks and could have been put back on the rack and sold as new. He wanted to know how this was possible. I explained my history with Mobil synthetic oils. I told him I had changed to Mobil 1 when the break-in was done at 500 miles. I changed again at 1,000 miles to get rid of the rest of the regular oil that was in the system. (I changed the oil filter at the same time, also.) He changed his own car over to Mobil 1. Besides that, the price I paid at Walmart was less than half what everyone else was charging, including online. The bottom line: The best oil at an impressive price. It doesn't get any better than that.

Many cars do come with, and recommend M1 as their replacement oil
I use M1 myself in my Dexos vehicle...but let's face it.
We drive Priuses.
The oil problem we usually encounter isn't what's in the sump but rather how much is left in the sump after 10,000 miles have elapsed between recommended oil changes.

I'm pretty sure my beloved company does NOT use a recommended oil. As a matter of fact.....I AM sure that they've used 20w50, because I busted them at it before the car was out of warranty. (never buy a used company car!!!!)
However (comma!!!) they also use a 5,000 mile change interval.
This means that if my car starts using oil at 1q/5,000 miles and I don't keep it topped off then there will still be over 2q left in the motor when they drain and refill the sump (at 80k, it doesn't use any.)

What does Toyota consider to be 'excessive' oil use?
If your car uses 1qt/5,000 miles and you don't keep it topped off, how much will be left in the sump if you follow the 10,000 mile oil change interval?
