I am wondering if anyone has a carbon fiber hood? Did you need to install hood pins? I have a black 2010 that has rock chips on the hood, and instead of repainting the hood, I am thinking about changing it to carbon fiber.
The hood is aluminum, so not much weight savings to be gained there. However, your wallet will be considerably lighter.
The hood is about $600 dollars, painting it is about 500. It says that hood pins are recommended, so that is my primary concern if it latches without the good pins
Than I shall order one also. Does it come with the latch already attached? Do I need to assemble anything?
what happens in a big front end crash? does the hood crumple or shoot back through the windshield? I was considering one of these but there may be a safety issue
Typically a standard carbon fiber hood is really just 1 layer of carbon fiber for looks and the rest is fiberglass. This makes them not much of a weight savings. In this case they will crumple up. Usually a full race Carbon Fiber hood that is majority carbon fiber is substantially lighter. But these do potentially cause a crash concern. I remember one vendor would not sell us an all out CF hood until we showed proof we had a full 10 point cage in the race car to protect the hood from cutting through the windshield. but this hood was about 5 times the cost of your typical CF hood.
