We are now beginning to move beyond the initial generic impression write-ups.

That brings the opportunity for true support, stuff with actual substance & purpose.

Here's the first I've come across...

MN2020 - VIDEO: Driving With Volts Not Gallons

And yes, that's me plugging in the Prius.

Nice video. Did I read the charging station correctly that they are charging $0.49/kwh to charge??

Here's my latest labor of love:

John's Stuff - Toyota Prius PHV - Annual Report

It's 11-months of daily & tank real-world data I've been collecting. In a month, it will become my first annual report driving a 2012 plug-in Prius. But for now, the document is preview of what there is available so far.

The thumbnail below gives you a general idea of what I was shooting for... lots of graphs and explanation of what they illustrated. Follow the link above to download a free copy.

John, I can't right click from my iPhone so I guess I won't read it. I don't see a technical reason to force people to right click. Not everyone wants to save the doc, sometimes people just want to look at it and then click back. I guess what I'm saying is I think your site has some usability issues.

Though on an iPhone you should be able to tap and hold and then open in a new tab :)

The reason is bandwidth. There isn't enough to continuously serve the demand. Downloading alleviates that.

As for usability, be thankful there aren't any advertisements.

Whether I left click and open or right click and save, it uses the same amount of bandwidth...??

By usability I mean it's "normal" to left click on links on the 'net, yours is the only site I can recall offhand that requires the right click save process.

This has been discussed in great length already in other threads. Please don't clutter this one with repeat comments & suggestions. I'd recommend one specifically for the topic (then it will be easy to find and refer to later for newbies and to update as new options become available) or using messages instead. The situation is not as simple as it appears.

This is excellent. Thanks for all the effort you put into doing this. Your detailed log data, charts, and analysis are a unique resource.

I noticed the downward spikes in the graph on page 8 titled "2012 PHV Year 1". It might be good to add a brief description of what those represent and the impact that it has on the red lifetime running average.

Feedback like that is exactly why I rounded up as much as I could with the 11 months of data collected so far. It took quite awhile to figure out what was even important and how to represent it with so many choices available.

Those two spikes are easy to see on the tank graph and basically invisible on the monthly. That's a good example. It shows when I went for a long-distance drive without the opportunity to recharge at all between fillups.

The lifetime line takes a noticeable turn downward right at the segment where you couldn't charge (the downward spike to 0 kWh / 100 miles) although if you weren't charging at all I would think the lifetime trend would stay flat (no new data input). I wondered if the lifetime calculation was trending down right there for other reasons or if it was trending down because it was incorrectly treating that segment as infinitely efficient on EV. Someone else might wonder too, hence the suggestion to somehow clarify that in a footnote or some other way.

With so few total miles driven at that point, the dip makes sense...

The odometer was only at 1,775 miles. Then for the next 663 miles only 8.7 kWh were used... which isn't even 3 full recharges and it's a massive chunk the total distance of 2,438 miles. That in itself is enough. I was also drove a few very short trips along with a morning with lots of stops... taking photos, because it snowed.

Documenting that level of detail sounds helpful, but it's not practicial. I took some trips during the summer with bikes on the back and kayaks on top. Both cause a hit too.

The point is to identify the trend overall. Does that line effectively do that?

Sure, it generally looks good and captures the right idea of immediate data variation vs. long term trend. It just looks slightly odd for "no charging" to be graphed as 0 kWh / 100. I see what is really happening from the detailed tank numbers and I understand why you graphed it that way. It's just a question of initial perception by someone looking only at the graph. I don't have a brilliant suggestion for how to make it better.

    (# EV miles + # HV miles) / ((# kWh / 33.7 kWh) + # gallons)

Is that the correct formula for MPGe ?

I've been working on a graph for the results of that to add to the document too...

What I found interesting was at this scale, the MPGe Lifetime value looks very similar to that on the MPG graph...

Of course, that does tend to make sense. It should correlate in some respect.

Yes, I've been using a more general variant:
(total miles) x (gas energy per gal) / (total energy all fuels)
You then convert all energy to the same units, such as BTUs, like this:
    miles x 115,000 / (kwh x 3412 + gal x 115,000)
    where:
    1 gal = 115,000 BTU
    1 kwh = 3412 BTU

Also, I would force the graph to range from 0 to 80 or 120 mpg, not to go from 45 mpg and up...because 45 mpg appears to be low. Maybe put in a line for the fleet average around 25 mpg for perspective.

    Next question:

How many BTU are there in E10 ?

100% gas obviously has more than the 90/10 blend with ethanol.
