Keep the gas in the cannister until you get to your destination, then fill the balloons!
It's safer than having your vision blocked by a carfull of balloons!!!

Fill the hatch with as many as will fit (in my C I have fit 6 easily), tie individual weights to each ballon, the weight of the balloons in the footwell can be 15" long and still give me full visibility. Good luck, the stores I went to last night are out of helium.

...do not know, KK6PD mentioned safety re: visibility. The other thing is if you put too many in the car, you are excluding the air in the car and filling it with inert gas (admittedly confined via membrane), I would say try to have a little ventilation window down a crack. If you start talking funny (if your voice goes up 2 octaves) pull over immediately and get out.

And your mpg will be better because your car will be lighter due to the lifting power of the helium! ;)

Yeah, A/C usage will be smaller too. I hate when my wife drives my Prius in winter with heat on Max, mpg back to 38 :(
