So... My car started making a loud thud noise... Thought I blew a tire...sounded similar... But I see nothing wrong... Not sure where to tow it to....
can you look underneath and see anything hanging down? are there any warning lights on? will it do it while moving or sitting still. you may have run over something not knowing it and it got stuck under the car and is flapping.. could ba a possibility that that plastic shield tht attaches to the front bumper is coming off and flapping because of wind
Wish it was that easy... I don't see anything real obvious.... There is quite a bit of grease and what look like grease covered wire hanging down where the drive shaft and the cv joints and tie rod connect
maybe you lost a cv joint. will the car even move? if the car does move does it start thumping right away?
the sound happens with revolution of of the tire... Not when idling in park.... No warning lights... But my engine got louder too... Whick seems strange
ok, im thinking it is a blown cv joint on the axle. addressing the possible engine issue: if you ran over something check your exhaust, if you did run over something it could of knocked something loose on the exhaust. start the car and crawl under there and listen to the exhaust see if you hear it leaking.
That too, sometimes when you get into a situation sounds can seem louder and things can seem like they are all wrong.
but this thumping noise and grease sounds like a blown CV joint. only way to really tell is to jack it up, either get under there and wipe everything off and check the CV joint boot, or take the tire off and check the CV joint boot.
Sounds strange but you could of ran over a plastic bag and that son of a gun got wrapped around the CV boot and cut it up and blew out the CV joint. and what you see that is greasy wire is actually the bag. I have seen this and heard of it happening.
not a problem, let us know what they find, but im banking on a blown CV joint, thats what it seems like. is this on the drivers side or passenger side?
By the way, your doing the right thing getting it towed, i would not drive on that either. Good job, some people get fed up and just drive the car and that can make things worse. not necessarily for the car (depending on what broke) but for the person themselves because it can completely bust and leave them sit in an intersection or something. Kudos to you being smart.
Drivers side I found the grease... It was making a clicking noise when I accellerated from a stop before this... So I assume you are right... Only thing I found weird is it didnt matter if I turned or not... And it was really quiet.... Not like other cars ive had with cv joint problems
If no warning lights on dash probably not Hybrid related. You may want to go to a regular mechanic. Dealer will be expensive for something like an axle. An independent shop can sell you aftermarket axles much much cheaper. Similar axle setup as Toyota Echo. If shop can change Echo axle they can do gen1 Prius.
well... I took it to my local toyota dealer in Port Moody, hopefully will be reasonable... I suppose I could have used a normal mechanic... but Im still not totally sure if thats all that is wrong or not, because im sure the engine got louder somehow... will keep you posted
