Thread cleaned up. I suggest the ones involved leave it at that. And watch the language on the forums, next time more than a simple thread cleansing will occur.

I ALSO HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH MY 2012 PRIUS V ONCE SO FAR AT THE TIME THINKING THAT THE FAN BELT WAS FROZEN TO A PULLY ON MOTOR I HAD ALSO MOVED THE CAR AND NOT LET IT WARM UP BEFORE TURNING IT OFF. AFTER READING ABOUT THIS I AM NOW LETING IT WARM UP OR MAKE SURE ENGINE IS OFF AND RUNNING ON BATTERY POWER. IT WAS IN 11/10/12 about.

Welcome to the knock club. :)

Nice thing about the Prius is that an animal wouldn't have gotten caught in anything... no belts. There is a pulley/dampner but not much of an obstacle.

I have fought Toyota for my 2012 making this noise and shaking. They put in the intake manifold finally. About two weeks later it did it again. I called and they said bring it in and they will clean the fuel system charging me $250.00. Why charge me when it's toyota a issue? So I went to AutoZone and bought fuel additives they recommended. I now add .40 cents per gal and overall mileage is down very unhappy.

Good morning. I hope you have a wonderful Easter. Just an update, I'm still fighting with Toyota (my dealer and Toyota Customer Service), they have to make it do it themselves, they have to have the car, the weather has to be right, the stars need to align, all the typical bs. I did send an email to Mr. Kellogg and I also called him from my dealership and left a message for him to call me. No response to either. Do you know of any other way to contact him? Our weather is beginning to break and I'm afraid noth
ing is going to happen until next year. I've had the car exactly a year and have 19,360 miles. I may be out of warranty before it gets really cold again and I was told that if they can't duplicate the problem, even though I have the calls and trips documented, if my warranty is out, I'm stuck. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Happy Easter to you!

I wouldn't loose sleep over this. We haven't heard of any premature engine failures/problems that might be related to the issue. I would however try a couple things.
    1. Find out if the dealer has a Customer Service Representative and if so, talk to them about it. They are suppose to be the owner's representative. It made all the difference in my case.
    2. Have them fully document the issue and then ask for a copy of the documentation and keep the case # from TCS. If in the future your engine develops issues, you can point to the documentation during arbitration. It might help.

    Have a great day.

Sorry to hear you didn't receive a call back from Jim. My guess is that he may keep his customer service interactions separate from "outside" issues. Also, I'm sad to say that his wife has been extremely ill for a long time which would definitely interfere with his lack of response.

I do believe the person who replied about keeping records is very on point. Keep copies of your service records; appts to speak to them; everything said; all observations, etc. Because the issue was brought to their attention during the warranty period I would think it would be covered after the warranty has run out.

Thanks for the info. Currently, Jeff Wyler Toyota in Clarksville, IN, has the car to try to duplicate the problem. We have had it happen 4 times now since 11/23/12. I even gave them step by step instructions on how to make it happen. I'm not optimistic anything will change, especially when the service manager read one part of t-sb 0010-12 (in an effort to see what that problem covered) and asked if we had any error codes. I told her "no" and she said that couldn't be the problem because the t-sb says there should have been a code. I had to call them back after I got ahold of my copy and tell them it states the vehicle "...may exhibit one or more of the following conditions...". We'll see what happens. By the end of the week the weather is going to start warming up and it will be next year before we'll see the problem again and my three year, 36,000 warranty will probably be up. I believe this is covered under the 60,000 warranty so we'll be OK, if not, we'll have all the paper work. Thanks for all your info, though. btw, we had the car 1 year exactly on 3/29/13. I keep spread sheets on the gas mileage and for the 19,360 miles we drove over that period we averaged 52.08 mpg. Taping the lower grill this winter helped immensely. We had dropped to a low 46's the first really cold month, back up to 53+ after tape installed. We're in Southern Indiana, about 40 miles from anywhere, so we have a pretty good combination of city and state highways vs interstate driving, probably 2/3 to 1/3. We're very pleased. Have a good day.

OK, here's my deal. I've been fighting this since late November, dealt with Toyota Customer Care, referred back to local dealer and have had the issue 4 times since 11/12. Dealer had car two days last week, hopefully the last below freezing mornings before spring (I'm getting old and dislike cold more and more each year). Here is what the invoice/work order shows when we picked up the car: MOVE OUTSIDE USING BATTERY POWER ONLY! DO NOT ALLOW ENGINE TO RUN. AFTER ABOUT TWO HOURS MOVE BACK INSIDE AGAIN ON BATTERY POWER ONLY! LET VEHICLE SIT OVERNITE (INSIDE). START VEHICLE NEXT MORNING. LET GASOLINE ENGINE CYCLE AND THE LOUD, GRINDING COLD START NOISE CAN BE DUPLICATED.
STARTED VEHICLE PER CUSTOMERS INSTRUCTIONS AND VERIFIED NOISE - ORDERED INTAKE MANIFOLD AS PER TSB. This is T-SB-0010-0012. They then stated the service tech says this particular T-SB has been expanded to include the 2012's AND 2013's. I have not been able to find any documentation to the confirm that but my new intake manifold (#17120-37054) is in and will be replaced as soon as I go back. Then I'll have to wait until next winter to verify if it solved the problem. Thanks to all the contributors to PriusChat for the rough, cold start information. Without it it would be virtually impossible to identify and rectify this situation because I don't believe most dealers would volunteer the info.

YIPPIE!!!! :) So happy for you and also happy you have a good example of how to attempt to get the issue to duplicate.

I get it installed next week but, more than likely, it will be Nov or Dec before I find out if it worked. I'll post back then. Thanks for your input.

btw, I think when the service dept. mgr. and my service advisor saw all the vids on Youtube, they gave in and made their decision pretty quick. I still can't find anything that tells me 0010-12 has been expanded. But, in my case, why should I care? It's just the other folks that have had the same problem. It sure would help for them to have t-sb in hand.

I know of a Toyota saleman who purchased a 2012 that has had the same problems we have experienced and my dealership said it's just a matter of time before Toyota adds 2012's to the TSB

I suppose y'all are going to thing I'm a nut case, however...since the installation of the 37054 intake manifold, over 5 tanks of regular 87 octane fuel (3 from the same station and two on the road) my average fuel mileage on the display and by manual calculation has increased by more than 4 mpg. No changes in driving habits, still combination of in town, local highways and interstate driving, short trips, long trips, just a good combination no different than any other month since we've owned the vehicle. If it was just one tank I would have figured I short filled the tank but it has been over 5 tanks. I'm not complaining, just trying to understand what difference the manifold would make. Any suggestions?

I have no idea, but I had the same experience, much improved mileage and the car is riding smooth.
