So I'm trying to figure out if the Prius C has "idle reduction technology". The dealer said yes when I bought it, but I can't find any sources to confirm. The reason I ask is because my state (Colorado) has some tax credits for cars that have idle reduction technology. Thanks!
Wouldn't that simply be the start/stop technology used on all Priuses? I think that "idle reduction technology" is referring to idle time reduction, and not idle RPM reduction, as it could be misinterpreted as.
It could be, I just don't understand it all. The publication that cites "idle reduction technology" is CO FYI income 67. Which then cites an EPA page on the topic. Just trying to understand what is used in the Prius C.
According to the article you mentioned: "Idle reduction technology allows engine operators to refrain from long-duration idling of the main propulsion engine by using an alternative technology." So it seems they are in fact referring to duration. Go ahead and take that tax credit for yourself.
Does the excise tax exemption apply to idling reduction devices installed on all vehicles? No. The exemption is only available for idling reduction devices installed on tractors. A tractor is a highway vehicle designed to tow a vehicle, such as a trailer or semi-trailer (aka an 18-wheeler). A tractor may carry incidental items of cargo when towing or limited amounts of cargo when not towing. (Reference: IRS Publication 510) SmartWay Verified Technologies | Technology | SmartWay | US EPA
