    Ok, here's one out of the blue (Prius, that is.) Believe me, I didn't Plan this one, strictly speaking, it just sorta happened is all. I last gassed up on Jan. 5 at which time I shoehorned in 10 gallons on the dot. Tank started out and stayed an unremarkable 62-63 mpg with cooler weather and another highway trip to Daytona Beach. But I noted how Long the gauge stayed on FULL and when I hit 500 I started to do some thinking, and to edge the mpg up thru the 63-points... Last few pips disappeared absurdly quickly and last one start blinking at 562 miles. I felt I could safely ignore that for a few days and made plans to fill a one gallon carry-along reserve. I also began to take note of an impending huge coincidence which was in the offing. More on that later. Anyway, long story shortened, I parked it in the garage last nite after taking one half mile extra (victory) lap around the neighborhood, and took this picture image.jpg I will fuel it this morning and post more particulars then.

    Ok, fueled at 708 miles. 63.9 displayed and 62.66 calculated on my 11.3 gallon fillup. I knew I was cutting it mighty tight having run 138 miles with a warning blink! It's clear to me that the little extra I squeezed in at last fill must've "distended my bladder" teehee. Now for the style points appeal. Apart from it being January and my 2007 being a GenII , the following short clip shows you WHY I had to go for it under reduced MPG circumstances: So it wouldn't allow my iPhone video extension which was crystal clear, just this crappy photo because the camera insisted on focusing on the dirty screen in Front of my odometer. If you can't see it, well, I turned my first 700 mile tank AND 70000 miles on the odometer at precisely the same time!!! Well, within half a mile or so. That had a certain appeal to a guy who likes his cars to be going 100mph when they cross the 100,000 or 200,000 threshold.

    My numbers are 1132.5 km (703.3 miles) on 45.17 litres (11.9 gal US) at 44 km/h (27.3 mph) for a CONS figure of 3.99 LHK (58.95 mpg US).
    • Filled with E10 91 RON (87 AKI)
    • First dot lasted 177 km
    • Fuel beep at 903.3 km
    • DTE = 0 at c. 960 km
    • My last 553.7 km have been at 3.5 LHK (3.7 corrected 63.5 mpg US) and 45 km/h
    My driving was cautious but I still drove up mountains to go cycling and at high speeds when required.

    Disclosure
    I'll need adjudication on this one. I think that I've made it by 1.3km (0.8 miles).

    Seems clear cut; however, yesterday I added a measured 4.6 L from a jerry can, a 2012 vintage 95 RON (90-91 AKI) petrol (gasoline) kept for a previous car. I figured that when I filled the tank it would click at 40 litres or less and I'd be well in. (Assuming that saving the fuel pump with a measured dose is an acceptable club technique.)

    However, the pump clicked at 40.57 litres. Adding 4.6 litres gives me 45.17 litres consumed.
    • Is 45.17 L more than 1 tank?
    • Was adding a dose within the rules? i.e. is club membership based on volume consumed or skill and nerves of steel?
    • 45.00 L at 3.99 LHK gives 1127.8 km (700.8 miles), so I surpassed the 700 miles on a tank. Just.
    If my plea is turned down on the facts, I'll try to win you over with SHOUTING:
    1. It's easy for you in the US. At 1126.5 km I have to drive almost twice as far to reach 700 miles.
    2. I've had a flat battery. No, really.
    3. And it's been so bloody hot. It was 42°c the other day.
    4. And the dealer put in 10W-30 oil at my last service. Treacle!
    5. That stale petrol had decomposed to little more than sugary water. So it was just taking up space.
    6. If a brimmed tank of 12.09 gal US (45.77 L) is acceptable, then 45.17 L is still one tank.
    7. I would have filled up at my regular for accuracy, but I had to pick my wife up from the Airport. So the pump's faulty.
    8. My effort is the closest to exactly 700 miles on exactly one tank.
    9. You need a lowest mark to reject pretenders from the club. I'm that mark.
    10. Who wants to be in your fruity club anyway?
    So what do you think? Am I in?;)

    That was a valiant effort despite all those challenges and having a high average speed. Plus you forgot to mention that you're a big guy!

    Looking at the numbers, even if you stopped at exactly 700 miles, you would've only consumed 44.95 liters @ 3.99 LHK (58.95MPG), which is within 45 liters in the strictest sense.

    Ohh Bradley....

    You went and made this difficult didn't ya. The general intent for the club was to accomplish this on one tank and without additional fuel added during the measured mileage. Now, obviously anyone can fudge the numbers if they are not following sportsman's etiquette but you admitted adding fuel so that shows your integrity.

    However, I must put it to the rest of the club. Did Bradley accomplish a 700 mile tank in the spirit of fairness as deemed by this club or did his additional fuel break the rules because:

    1. He is too close to the maximum amount of fuel the tank can hold and therefore he may not have made 700 miles without the addition?
    2. He did not sweat as much as you did because of this additional fuel?

    The club will decide your fate, young Bradley.

    I'd say admit him, but put an MLB (major league baseball) asterix by his name. Braddles can have the asterix removed upon doing a 700 mile (1120 km) tank without the assistance of his Jerry Can. Of course, Braddles could just overfill his tank a bit on his fill up prior to his attempt at 1120 km run, just to give him extra assurance that he won't run out. That extra 1 liter of petrol will help.

    I believe the true capacity of the Prius tank 2010-13 models, not plug in, have about a 13.5+ gal true
    capacity when filled up to the top of the neck with standing fuel. With this method 700 miles on a tank looks like it could be done without running the fuel pump dry or to very low levels.

    I know about the theory that fumes from the tank damaging the canister filter in the vehicle. Just curious how many have been replaced by the members of this forum by filling up the tank to the neck?

    You are taking more of a risk by running the tank to bone dry levels by burning out your fuel pump then you
    will ever have with the fuel canister issue.

    Hi Everyone I wanted to know what I can do to get to the 700mile club. I am already in the 600 mile club but I don't know what other skills I need to get to this number using my everyday drive which is about 11 miles each way. Please help.

    I hear you, I also have short commute to work and in the morning with 50°F, the coolant temp gets to around 150°F (a little downhill route) and on the way back I max out at about 63 MPG. Include some even shorter trips and I'm at 60 MPG max.

    I did a test with longer commute (50 miles) with no highway at average speed 31 mph and I managed 76 MPG, all I can say is wait for warmer weather, lower your speed, don't use the brakes and don't use the car for anything shorter than 10 miles.

    Hm, I wonder why 10 miles is a very familiar number to PiP.

    What can help is knowing that 10x your displayed mileage is ~ 10.5 gallons. If you have a displayed MPG value of 67.0 or higher, you have a reasonable shot of making the 700 mile club. Because @ 670 miles you will have likely used 10.5 gallons and the extra 30 miles will consume ~ 0.5 gallons, thus a total of 11 gallons in a tank that is purported to hold 11.9 gallons. You can give yourself some comfort room by overfilling your tank a little. After the first click (when the pump shuts off), you can add about 0.2 to 0.3 gallons with little fear of overfilling the tank. This extra 0.2 to 0.3 gallons will help you have a little extra gas in the tank so you don't run out.

    But, if you can avoid short trips, that will help a great deal. Keep your freeway speeds down (55 mph is better than 65 mph), drive like you don't have brakes (let off the gas pedal sooner and coast longer) and keep your tire pressures up (near max PSI), then you should do OK.

    What is your normal displayed MPG reading?
