Hello all. I've been posting here for a little bit. Frankly, I was planning on buying a Prius c, but decided to go bigger. I don't like the split rear window of the Liftback, nor the hard seats. I even test drove the Ford C Max, which is a nice car. But in the end, I chose the car with the best back seats, with the most space, and with the nicest interior, the Prius v! I got a 2012 Prius v 3, in Magnetic Gray. (I nicknamed the car Theon Greyjoy, for all you Game of Thrones fans out there). I got it for $25,975 before taxes and doc fees. So far, I've driven about 100 miles, and I'm getting 46.2mpg! I'm going to be hypermiling and going for 50mpg per tank! Can it be done? I've been enjoying the ride, the space, and the interior. I wish it had an Eco Score display like the Prius c, which is pretty fun. But I'm very satisfied with the car, and happy to officially join the Priuschat community.
Definitely YES.... with the right commute... I drive 33-34 miles to work one way (68ish roundtrip). Most of it is freeway. I consistenly get 54 mpg (indicated-- 52 mpg at the pump) per tank. On my current tank (420 mi), I'm getting 55.0 mpg thanks to afternoon rush hour on I-5. The v's mpg (as I'm sure the HB and C are) varies greatly with your commute. I'm curious to see if anyone has gotten a tank average of 60 mpg or better.
I get about 45 in the summer and about 41 in the winter. I drive mostly short trips and there are lots of hills where I live which cuts down the mpg considerably.
Congratulations on your purchase! I believe averaging 50mpg is possible. I'm obviously not doing that well ... lots of mixed driving. But when I've tried, I've been able to average 50-52mpg.
Hi..... I just got my v and haven’t yet figured out what to make of the running milage and trip information.. I miss how easy it was to read on the Gen II and the little car graphics.. Any tips to get over 400 miles to the tank.... was disconcerting to see the cruising range shed miles faster than actual miles travelled.... and the mpg average is swinging wildly and not giving me a consistent read ( or I don’t now where to look for it), Thanks
Compared to the Gen 2, you can drive one pip 'deeper' in the v safely. Without the bladder, you can safely drive to zero pips, then get gas. I get 10.5 gallons with zero pips for 10 miles. It is hard for Gen 2 owners to be that trusting. Press disp until it shows avg, I think you have the instantaneous MPG

In North America, the Gen 2 Prius had a variable sized gas tank called a bladder, it was very difficult to predict when one would run out of gas. We all got very cautious. In 30 fill ups, I have only just become brave enough to let it go to 0 pips the last 3 tanks, I am putting 10.5 gallons and getting 415 miles recently. oh thanks; a variable gas tank ? who would have thunk. I was bumming that the v was not only more sluggish .. but has way less mileage than the 2008 Prius I was driving. I so want to keep the magical 400 miles per tank equation. I really have to read the manual and get the Fuelly app. thanks....
I am not feeling more sluggish, I only lost 6 MPG, and it is WAY bigger in back, so I am very happy. I wish I had 3 door SKS, that I could set my estimated speeds on each type of road in the Navigation, and that you could multi tap the cruise control like I had in my Gen 2, but those are minor.
What is multi-tap'ing the cruise control? Curious as the last 5 cars I've owned all worked the same way as the v.
In the Gen 2, if I was going 57 and wanted to go 62, I could rapidly tap the resume lever 5 times. Sadly, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak pointed out some drivers could be confused by that into thinking they had unintended acceleration. I I'm jealous! I use to get that with my 07 Prius but with my 2012 Prius V the best, I can get has been around 35. I'm hoping that it will get better this summer!
I discovered a pretty huge difference in mileage in the Arizona winter. I can get up to 50 mpg in warm weather if I hypermile. I was much closer to 40-42 in the colder weather. I wonder how much an engine block heater would improve the situation.
Please tell me what "hypermiling" is. This is my first hybrid and I love it. But I parked it getting 45.7 and went to Mexico for 2 months and come back to cold michigan weather and now 35 is best I can do. Does anyone know why? And don't forget hypermile.
Hybrids do react to cold weather badly, (the engine runs to make hot water for the heater) but spring is coming!
