Is coda closing shop? I wonder what the reason is for their removal?

I'm confirming that Coda is closing. Their storefront in Century City is no more. They still have a car in the lot and some signage but the store itself has all the windows wrapped up and doors locked. So the charging station probably is gone because of that too.

    Well, so much for that.
I think they had a very odd positioning in the market. It wasn't cheap because it had a large battery, yet the interior was insanely cheap, to the point of not having automatic windows. So it was neither here nor there. The people who could afford it would refuse to drive in such a cheap car, and the people who would be okay with the cheap interior couldn't afford it.

Its just a display store, not their main shop which is a few blocks down. Is the shop on olympic still open?

It's hard to say without walking in but the signage is still there.

I drove by the Martin Coda dealership on Olympic this afternoon and it looked like they had at least 1 car onth lot.

There's a difference between a Coda store/dealership closing or moving and the company going under.

I don't think the latter's the case, yet. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they go under by end of 2013.

lol, glad we could make that distinction. i meant more that it was an indication that things weren't going well. Tesla also has plenty of display stores and those aren't closing down.

when you think about the cars they make at that price point, it's hard to imagine that they can consistently and successfully sell lots of units.

Yeah, unfortunately Coda doesn't report sales and all we're left to is scraps of info. I've test driven one before and was unimpressed (posted briefly about it at Coda review thread/discussion | PriusChat). And yes, the interior bits were very unimpressive for the price and it was very unrefined vs. other BEVs in its price range.

Looking at the plug-in sales at November 2012 Dashboard - HybridCars.com and choices available from more solid companies/less likely to go under, it highly likely Coda's sales are dismal.

I was at Century City again Yesterday and they have notices up that they are going to start charging for parking at $1 and hour for the first three hours instead of the first three hours free. Also on Monday both EV parking spaces were taken by Leafs and they were both charging.

Went back to Century City for the first time since they started charging for parking. It appears that if you shop at Gelson's they will validate for 2 hours. Since that was the primary reason for us to go the the Mall today we finished up getting parking for free.

I also noticed that the Coda store now has Tesla signs on it and says "Coming Spring 2013". The old wiring for the Coda chargers is still in place but no idea if Tesla will install chargers or not.
