I have a 2004 NHW20 second hand PRIUS imported from Japan. The problem is I live in Mongolia, extreme weather condition, -35 to -40 degrees Celsius in the winter. And it's really hard to find a garage in this time of the year in Mongolia, just using a thick car cover which doesn't have any heating or warming system. So I'm worried about two things: 1. Driving without warming up the car. 2. In such cold weather car battery and motor works ok? Want to make car battery and everything of my car last long. Thanks in advance.

2005 Prius: Order date: July 2004 - Delivery date November 2005 after an 16 month wait!
    Dealer: Lexinton Toyota, Lexington, MA.
Leather/ heated seats/ fully loaded. 161,000 miles and going strong!
90 mile commute daily + many trips!
Car has performed flawlessly and driven in less than ideal conditions! Used to deliver mail part-time between 2007 and 2010. Full time during 2011 in the Adirondacks where the low temps dip to -30 and a high temp could be as low as -10! The winter of 2010/2011 was one of the snowiest on record! Winter snow tires have alleviated traction problems! Great heat and gas mileage even with the drop off in mpg during the winter.

I'm in the club! But I did take a severe shortcut, as I bought my 2007 with almost 92K miles. Right now, I'm at the dealer, getting the brakes flushed, the engine and inverter coolant drained and filled, and the transaxle fluid drained and filled. Previous owner did EFI and throttle plate at 80K, so I figure I don't have to do those for a while yet.

DYI, I've replaced the headlights, the engine and cabin filters, and and installed XM. All I can say is that I love this car. It's the smartest vehicle out there, and my hope is that I run it for at least another 100K miles.

Change the spark plugs too, use the iridium tipped ones. Most here on PC say do it at 100K. You might consider the PCV valve also. Lots of labor involved on that one, galaxee posted a good write up on the DIY end of it. As I understand, the valve is on top of the engine in the back under the coweling (SIC). IIRC, you have to take off a bunch of stuff to get to it, but it is supposed to be a DIY job if you are that type. You might want to check the water pump belt too. Unless it has been changed before you got the car, it needs to be changed soon. Checks for cracks on the inside of the belt.

When you say outer edges do you mean one edge on each front tire or two edges per tire?

    |-| |-|

If all 4 edges (2 per tire) are wearing before the centers you should increase your tire pressure.

    |-} {-|

If only the outward facing edges are wearing you are on the right track already

I just want to make sure you don't waste money on fuel/tires when you could be fixing an issue by increasing the tire pressure.

also on the topic of 100,000 miles my 2005 is getting close, should happen sometime in early 2013.

I bought a 2008 with 70k in August 2012 and I just passed 100k on the 31st of December 2012. Drive about 6500 miles a month and do all my own oil changes and majority of the maintenance. I will be changing the transmission fluid and coolant more than likely in the next couple of months. So far I averaged 47mpg in summer and 42 in the winter. The Prius saves me about 250$ a month in gas.

Thanks, Ron. I was gonna wait until 120K to do the sparks, as the repairs cost $500 and I got Xmas bills to pay! :(

I think the water pump itself was replaced back in 2010 -- "electric hybrid w/p" is the repair record at 73,363 miles. Would the belt have been replaced at that time as well? It was part of the recall campaign.

    Sung,

I believe the pump you are referring to is what is commonly known as the "inverter pump". That is the pump that pumps coolant through part of the radiator and into the inverter and IIRC the transaxle also. That pump should have been replaced with the recall you referred to. The water pump and belt that I mentioned is a separate item. It circulates coolant through the other part of the radiator and then is used to cool the engine. The pump is driven mechanically by a belt. Your car '07 (Gen 2) will have that pump and belt. It can be found on the lower passenger side of the engine towards the front of the car. The belt is subject to wear and cracks. The pump also tends to weep coolant at the shaft over time. Look for a pink stain in the center of the pulley, and inspect the belt for wear. If you find a problem there, you should consider changing those items.

FYI, the engine coolant pump was redesigned on the Gen 3. It is now electric, and the belt is no longer an issue.

EDIT: There are actually four different pumps on the US version of the Gen 2.

Patrick Wong posted this in another post. I have copied and pasted the info here.

North American 2G Prius have four coolant pumps:

    1. engine coolant pump
    2. heater core pump (to circulate coolant when the engine is off)
    3. inverter/transaxle coolant pump
    4. coolant heat recovery system pump (to move coolant to and from the CHRS canister.)

    Good luck to you.

I bought my 2005 Prius in Oct of 2004 and have almost 118,000 and still love it. I do have a front headlight out and would love to find a good place in Thousand Oaks, CA to replace it (rather than Toyota at $154.)

Hit 100k a couple of months ago.

    Purchase date: 2/7/2007
    Model: 2007 Touring
    Lifetime average MPG = 53mpg

Overall opinion: I still love the car and am now looking into a 2013 model.

    Problems:
2 years 6 months - 30,000 miles: Both HID headlights started to intermittently go dark. I replaced them both myself after Toyota reduced the bulb price from $300 to $150.

2 years 9 months - 35,000 miles: Had some feedback in the sound when using an iPod. I installed a ground loop isolator.

4 years 6 months - 75,000 miles: After being parked for two weeks at an uncovered dock in Port Fourchon (during a long, hot Louisiana summer) the rubber covering the rear hatch switch melted (but not completely). At first I couldn't figure out how my hand got dirty. After the initial tackiness went away, I was able to use it with no issue. When the weather cooled off later, it began to be more difficult to get the switch to work. I finally had it replaced a year later for ~$150.

Recall work: The accelerator was modified. The inverter coolant pump was replaced. I think I still have one more recall job needed.

My 2005 Prius II passed 140,000 miles a couple of weeks ago. I have not spent one penny on unscheduled maintenance in the time I've owned it. I replaced the spark plugs at 100,000 miles, but I kept them because they were still like new. Original brake pads/linings, and the pads still have 8mm on them. In 95% highway driving, it averages just over 50 mpg on an annual basis. It still amazes me that a car with this much technology can be this rock solid dependable!

I agree, it's a real slap in the face for many non technical updated cars "non ev/hybrid" that are still struggling with maintenance issues.

Almost makes you feel like it's an integrity issue whereas they want to see you back to make their real money in the service dept.

Thank goodness for competition, too bad it had to come from overseas.

We bought it used about 3 and 1/2 years ago.

I passed 100k a few months ago and forgot to post here. Now at 114k.

Had the Inverter Coolant Pump recall done and they did the mat recall without me asking.

I change the oil with Mobile One every 5 to 7 thousand miles with a new filter.

I put one set of tires on it. New windshield wipers.

I just changed the trans fluid. As far as I know it has the original 12 volt battery in it. I might change it in the next couple of months, just because.

I don't keep exact records but mileage varies between 44 and 50 mpg. I will probably also change the spark plugs in the near future.

I'm a little bit tardy in posting here...

Rudy is at about 125K now.

We've changed sparkplugs, finally... maybe we should have done that at 100K.
We did the recall work on the inverter pump, but haven't had the steering column thing done yet.
Mobil1, every 5k until 100k, now we are only changing the filter and topping off at 5k, complete change is at 10k.
Trans fluid has been changed twice now.
We're on our second set of Michelin Hydroedge tires.

Still doing about 45 - 47 mpg, even with heavy rain.

Have had two window motors replaced under warranty. No other work other than hitting a deer for a little over $7k in damages.

    Couple tires and routine maintenance.

2005 Package 6. With reluctance I purchased my Prius used from a University Law Professor in September, 2011 with 67,oo0 miles, now have 100,183 as of today. She only drove it to school and back and sold it because she could no longer drive solo in the car pool lane! All services were performed at the dealer at the regular maintenance intervals.

I replaced the traction battery (naturally) to be safe, the ICE water pump due to seepage. I replaced fluids and filters per maintenance schedules and with help from all the articles here, thanks to all!

Replaced Goodyear Integrities with Michelin Energy Saver A/S's a few months ago thanks to your recommendations.

So far my Prius matches my last vehicle, a 1998 Infiniti QX4 as far as reliability goes, but I traded 15-18 mpg max to 45-51 mpg. Right now I will take the increased MPG and faster acceleration over the QX4's inadequate V6 anytime!
