I just went out and took a look to remind myself how it is put together. I think the answer is yes to your question - you might be able to make a small modification so that you could lift the entire tray out easily with out dumping everything in it.

The way it works is that the tray has two plastic pins molded in to the rear. The console has two corresponding slots. The pins snap into the slots and then rest on the bottom of the slot. The problem is that the top of the slot is designed to be tight so when you try to remove the tray you have to have to snap it out and it does not work well with all sorts of change etc in the tray. Might be a little nub at the top of the slot - hard to see.

It looks to me, now that you mention it, that you could take a very small file, or maybe a utility knife, and trim back the top of the slot a bit so that the tray would come out easily. Good idea. If I get a free moment and the weather warms up a bit I may give that a try.

I went to my dealer and they gave me the tray for free, even though it is not included. I have attached before and after photos. Now I just need to find an organizer for the bottom of the console box!

Since I bought my car in December I just called my sales guy and asked him for it...see if that works for you?

I would like to get one for my new 2013. I have to stop by the dealership tomorrow and will ask. If not, I will definitely be looking to buy one online.
