200,000 Mile Club

When I posted the question on Toyota facebook page to their mechanic I was asked to call Toyota care, which I did. After I explained my problem to the nice lady she put me on hold to look into it. When she came back she first informed me that it was a warranty problem and that my car was no longer under warranty (Really? now that was funny!!!) but then she said they would be willing to basically split the cost of having it repaired. I thanked her but told her I could not afford my share and had other things that could use repair that actually matter much more. I really did appreciate it. With all that being said, Toyota sent me an AMEX check for $50 for my inconvenience. That was a wonderful surprise that arrived just a few days before Christmas.

On this particular car, I had all my troubles early on when warranty covered... Ie: window went mental, mfd screen went out.... And about 25k miles ago the battery died by I'm suspecting my son's instantaneous blast start offs to that.

400 for a junkyard battery and 400 to put it in.... No problems since.

My other one is at 177 k miles going strong, my mechanic says average is 250k.

He also said 1st generation prius batteries leaked and were terrible compared to 2nd generation prius's.

I have a 2007 Prius and I am nearly at 227,000 and the car runs great. It is using a little oil and the mileage has degraded to about 42 mgp for highway miles. It is my busines car and I put about 40,000 miles per year on it. I actually went 189,000 miles before I had to put brakes on it. It is without a doubt the most reliable car I have ever owned. Nothing is close. I usually run my cars to at least 200,000 miles. Since this one has been so reliable my new goal is 300,000. Considering my average annual miles, it should occur some time near the end of 2014. I am attaching a photo of the odometer taken 1/11/2013. As Neil Young sings: Long May You Run.

 

Humm, my son felt like his power degraded right before the battery went out. Not sure about mileage.
Aside from that they both get good mileage.
There is some consumptive oil use, about 1 qt a month based on how much it's driven. But I use 0-30 synthetic , a tad thinner than normal.

fellow serious mileage people!

Be aware that there is an odometer glitch for the 2005 and 2006 Prius models -- the odometer maxes out at 299,999.

Really.

I'm now at approximately 301,081 miles. I say approximate, because it took me a few miles to figure out that the odometer wasn't moving past 299,999. I set a trip odometer, and that is just over 1000 miles now.

Oh, and I should give a few more details:

We bought the car used from a Toyota dealership in Feb 2008. It had around 40K miles on it at the time.

It still has its original hybrid battery (or batteries) and almost all its original parts. I've had the recall work done on the steering column (although mine was fine, the replaced the pin anyway), and on the water pump (a couple years ago).

Other than, it's been the routine service, new tires, etc. I'm not sure if the "normal" battery has been replaced, either, but I think it must have been at some point.

I ave been lucky, at present I have 309,450 miles. I put on 700-1000 miles a week. Engine burns 1 quart every two weeks. Wheel bearings at 100,000, and a catalytic converter at 265000. One brake job, and I replaced the 12v battery as a precaution. I would like to know if anyone has rebuilt a engine with success. I believe 450,000 is possible with the original engine & batteries. The dealerships have no expierence with a 2006 with this many miles. One electrical issue is the front & rear defrost button on the stearing wheel only works now with the wheel turned 360 degrees. I still get 45-50 mpg summer, 38-44 winter. Oil changed every 4000-5000 depending on time.

 

If you will have the "clock spring" changed, the buttons should start working again. It is a cable that is wound like a spring that is in the steering column. All cars have them, and they do wear out over time.

Any good mechanic should be able to do the job, or take it to the stealer.

Sounds to me like you got your money's worth out of yours! I hope our's last as long.

I bought my 2006 in 2009 with 75K miles. I now have 214K .Same batteries .Yes I replaced Transaxel fluid at 175K as well as coolant and plugs .Original brake pads but will need replacement within 15k miles. I change my own oil .Used to change it every 5k with Mobil 1 hi mileage .Now use Mobile 1 Extended every 10k but it burns 1 qt.every 5k miles . Love this car !

 

The only set I bought were Michelin's LRR forget the model but were warranteed for 60 k and I now have about 80K and they need to be replaced shortly .Any suggestions ?

 

229,006 miles on my 2005 Prius. We purchased this from the dealer in 2009. There was one previous owner and the maintenance records looked pretty good. We put 30,000-33,000 miles per year of mostly highway miles on it.

At 207,000 miles, I had to replace the engine that was burning oil. Dealer sold me a used 85,000 mile version, installed for $3,100. Also, had to replace the catalytic converter. Dealer wanted $2,000 and I was not going to pay that. They refused to install after-market converter and I saved almost $1,000 by purchasing parts myself and having my mechanic replace it. I got away without replacing one of the 2 sensors,

Otherwise, we've just replaced tires and done maintenance.

We live and drive at elevations exceeding 6500 feet, except when driving cross country. I see between 32mpg and 42mpg per tank (usually around 37 and up).
