My car is at the shop now, they told me that because my is at 125k the battery will cost me about $5,000! That is sooo much money and I do not know what to do. I have been reading that California Emissions law says that the Hybrid Battery is warranted under the 10 year or 150k miles. Is this true? I am not the original owner, do I still qualify? And where do I find this info so that I can show the dealer people?

I bought the car used with 76k on it, in California, and now there is 125k on it. It is registered in California...

Was it purchased as new in CA (or CARB state) and always registered in such states?

If so (and assuming it doesn't have a salvage title), then you'd have a 10 year/150K mile HV battery warranty. The details are in your warranty booklet. Assuming this is all the case and the dealer is giving you a hard time, go to another dealer and/or call Toyota (Toyota Help) to log a complaint.

Yes I believe it has been always registered in California. I do not have a warranty booklet. Do I need this or is it automatically a california law that dealers must follow? I will call Toyota Help, thanks so much for all your help!! Today was stressful...:)

As cwerdna says it has to have been CA, all the way.

However, even if the car has not always been in CA and even if you need a new traction battery, if that's the only thing wrong you need to have your car towed from that shop to anywhere else, you need to tell them to go to hell and you should let people here know the name of the shop so that nobody ever takes their Prius or any other car there.

$5,000 would be a complete rip-off. A battery replacement should cost no more than $3,500 and that's with an entirely new battery.

I can't speak to a law, but as long as the conditions I mentioned are met, you should be covered by the 10 year/150K mile HV battery warranty. Unfortunately, Toyota doesn't have the warranty booklet available online for the 05 Prius at Toyota Online Owners Manuals and Service Manuals. They have it on newer Priuses but not the 05 or 06.

If the car was sold new in California and has a clean title (i.e. not salvage title) the battery has a 150k mile warranty. It does not matter if you are not the original owner or if the car has moved to a different state.

Silly506, I feel your pain... I recently bought an '07 Prius with 100k on it. Last Saturday 12/29 (my birthday) the car generated the following DTCs: U0100, U0111, and P3000. Toyota confirmed the traction battery was bad, and they told me it would be covered 100% under warranty. They even gave me a 2012 Prius to use while mine is in the shop (also at no charge). So, hopefully you car is an original CA car and they'll take care of you as nicely as they are taking care of me.

I still can't believe my traction battery failed at 116k, but I'm glad it didn't wait until after 150k!

Best of luck with your battery replacement.

You guys keep talking about a California warranty of 10 year/150K miles.

What about a 10 year/150K warranty for the rest of us that don't live in Cali.

Is this warranty a nation wide warranty from Toyota?

No it is unique to CARB states, and since not all states that adopted the CARB emissions rules adopted all of them, or adopted them at the same time or with the same effective date, you need to do research if you are in a CARB state other than California.

    New Jersey
    Connecticut
    Oregon
    Washington*
    Rhode Island
    New York
    Maine
    Massachusetts
    Pennsylvania*
    New Mexico
    Colorado
    Maryland
    Arizona#
    Utah
    Vermont
    Florida

    * Has some CARB rules, but not improved warranty.
    # only a CARB state in the past, as they revoked clean air.

The 150k mile warranty only applies to carb States ... there are something like 9 or 10 or maybe more states that follow carb rules as they pertain to hybrid battery warranties. If you don't know whether or not your state follows carb rules you can google it to find out. The warranty is not from the manufacturer per se ... but rather the warranty is forced upon manufactures by those states following carb rules.

In some lists, I see Utah as a CARB state, but I do not find warranty provisions on any state of Utah websites or in the Toyota warranty.

Notice that Arizona is no longer a CARB state and that Utah is not mentioned.

You can get some good information if you look up California Air Resources Board (CARB) in Wikipedia. Basically you will need to find out if your state adopted the CARB regulations or does it follow the less stringent federal EPA regulations?

As Hill stated above, the extended warranty is imposed on the manufacturer by the CARB regulations, and those 'benefits' are isolated to 'CARB' states. If you are not sure, you can always call your Toyota service department and they will tell you what your warranty is.

^^^^ You are joking :ROFLMAO: from what I have read most of the dealers do not know or do not want to know.

Geez it doesn't hurt to ask. All it takes is a phone call. I Called 3 dealerships when I wanted to know and all 3 corroborated CA's carb website. But heck, sometimes you just have to do a little homework. Don't just rely on what folks say here on PC - nor the dealership for that matter. Print it from your state's website. Only then do you have it in writing.

People are human and make mistakes. Check with a few dealerships you may stumble on a service advisor with a brain.
