cylinder 1 misfiring during warm-up

    Today after work I drove home and results were as before. Starts cold, misfires, warms up while driving home. While driving home does not misfire.

    So when I got home I put the Prius into "inspection mode". It went from not misfiring while driving to misfiring while idle.
    So it appears to be a misfire while idle problem. Cold/Hot does not appear to make the difference.

    I will study this scenario some more over the weekend

    Any suggestions?

    I am afraid PriusGuy is correct, the likely scenario being that the air leak at the injector at high revs caused the combustion temp to rise on that cylinder burning the exhaust valve. A leak down test would confirm this.

    OK, over the initial shock.

    I will discuss with the service dept to see if they can do a leak down test. I am fairly light-footed on the accelerator, but I can't speak for the first 80k on the car. Those weren't my 80k so I don't know.

    When I say I put the car in inspection mode, I mean putting it in drive, holding the brake till the engine comes on then shifting to neutral. Engine stays on in idle(but drains the battery). This is sufficient for idle test?

    A few questions:
    1)Is it still OK to drive the car?
    2)What would have caused the o-rings to fail on the injectors. I would think they are designed/spc'd to last longer? no?
    3)Would this fall under power-train warranty?
    4)Any chance it could be anything less intrusive?
    5)The $$ to fix?

    3.) It absolutely should!

    4.) Looking very doubtful at this point, but if its covered under warranty, I'd be happy that it will be fixed n/c.

    5.) Basically if its a burnt or stuck valve the cylinder head will have to come off and a valve job performed. Its not uncommon (valve jobs) but on this engine it probably is pretty uncommon. The dealer might opt to install a new cylinder head (doubtful but they might) or go the cheaper route of the valve job.

    So the saga continues. DealershipA has not gotten back to me. I don't expect to hear from them at this point. I have taken my car to DealershipB. DealershipB seems to think it is the injectors(as of Friday). Expecting an update and my car ready for pick-up tomorrow.

    DelearshipA said it may be the fuel-rail. Then verbally said they had switched the injector. If they had switched the injector the fuel rail would have already been off for visual inspection. Once I gave that some thought. The two comments didn't add up hence I moved on to DealershipB.

    Still waiting,..

    What are the rules about posting dealership names on here?

    WoooHooo!!!!

    First cold morning with the Prius back. Nasty #1 misfire gone.

    To keep the cost down the dealershipB put in a set of used injectors. They work much better. They returned my original set.

    I am going to give it a few more days just to be sure. But Seems like the problem is resolved.

    Cool!! I hope its fixed. Thankfully the cylinder head didnt have to be removed. I will keep an eye on my '07's injectors for sure.

    I used to have similar issues with a Camry. When it would start idling rough in the morning, I would have to clean the injectors. Not just the drop in the tank cleaner, but disable the fuel pump and hook up pressurized can to the rail. That would take care of it for a year or so.

    To finish off this commentary:

    DealershipA:
    After 3 weeks I still have not heard back from Open Road Toyota Port Moody. I will not be returning my car there, EVER.​

    DealershipB:
    The dealership that resolved the issue.​

    From here on in I will be making an effort to become more knowledgeable on how my cars work, and becoming more DIY.

    The Prius has been running magnificently after the repair(faulty/dirty injector), and I have no complaint, just a happy Prius owner once again.
