Interesting point, is the Long Island Gas/Electric company buring clean fuel. I would think they are. Not Nuclear but maybe natural gas.

I know some energy companies offer off peak electric at a lower price point. Is there anything like that where you are?

With your higher EV % you might be less. I think that site assumes 28.8% EV for the PiP.

It is 190 g/mi with my zip code. You sure you picked the right car? :)

    I
LIPA buys electricity from National Grid. I can't find much info. on what National Grid is producing. There is a coal fired power plant near me, but I understand that this plant is offline now. It is used only when there is peak demand, like in the summer. The next closest plant burns natural gas. Some of the power goes from/to Connecticut.

No discount from LIPA for off peak use. I pay .19, but the average is .20.

It should be more because 50 MPG on gas would emit 222 g/mi. If 28.8% EV raises it to 300 g/mi, 52% EV would have higher CO2 output.

You must be talking about Shoreham. I grew up in Long Island but moved to California in the late 80's. That almost went Neuclear but State Gov put a stop to that. Natural gas is safer.

EPA data is outdated so that figure might have been true when that coal power plant was still in use.

I know. That's why it is better to focus on national average. PiP is cleaner than a regular Prius when using national average electricity.

The National Grid Plant in Port Jefferson (Long Island) uses fuel oil to generate electricity. I see the huge tankers at their dock all summer long as a pass by there on my way out to the L.I. Sound for a day of fishing.
I've calculated my rate at about 20 cents/kWh from LIPA/National Grid.

I'm sure it is scrubbed and cleaned at the plant, but getting the oil from the ground, refined, and to the consumer has to have some impact with all the controls allowed. The way I see it the Prius and Volt is the lesser offender in an offended world.

I just looked it up. It uses natural gas and oil, but it is old and one of the "dirtiest" power plants in NY.

I meant the savings is "more than 300 g/mile" relative to my SUV. The site assumes 28% EV, and I am at 52%. I might be saving near 400 g/mile.

Don't worry about it. It is just one old dirty power plant out of many. National average for PiP is 210 g/mi. If you choose any other plugin, you will find the emission to be much higher, so you have the cleanest plugin out there.

If you don't plug it in, you'll reduce your CO2 but gas will cost you more. See if you can buy cleaner electricity. Is that train station (where you charge) also has the same zip code? Perhaps the electricity there is from a different powerplant.

If you want do some research, EIA 860 (Energy Information Agency) lists the power plant addresses. Cross reference to EIA 923 for recent fuel purchases.

Agreed. IMO, no one should buy or not buy the PIP based on where their personal electricity happens to get generated from. Buying many PIPs or other plugins should be looked at as generating "new" demand, so what matters is the "next" power plant built to satify this new demand in your area.

Technically, you can easily offset one full charge per day (3 Kw-hrs) by reducing other electrical demands at home and/or work. Cut 125 watts of "always on" load and you've saved enough for one full charge every day.

Moreover there is much less electric demand at night then during day in most areas so if you charge at night it is highly unlikely that charging will contribute to the construction of another power plant. In air conditioning climates the demand peak occurs in the late afternoons so get the charging done when you first get to work. Where electric heat and hot water is prevalent, the peaks occur in the early morning, so there charge in the afternoon.

    Thanks USB,
For my 2012 PIP in 14564 it states that the Average New Vehicle emits 500 grams/mile, while my car in my location only emits 190 grams/mile.

I can now Breathe with Pride !!!

You should see if you can buy clean electricity. I am able to buy wind power for charging so my ghg is running less than 50 g /mile and I buy the inexpensive offsets for that at terrapass.
