As for the 12V being charged when plugged in, that was a clever improvement.

 

when i leave for an extended period, I will connect my battery tender, as I do for all my vehicles and toys when not in use for extended periods. battery lasts for many many yrs.

I'm not sure what you mean. SKS generally is "awake" such that I can touch the handle and unlock in one motion. This is not the case on my dad's gen 2, which is actually quite annoying once you get used to the gen 3 behavior.
That said, I'm not surprised that they significantly reduced the amount of power it draws.

 

My pip SKS works just like my 05.
