At 13,000 miles I've experienced the "rough start". Pulled it out of the garage to wash and wax it. I tried to put it in EV Mode but it wouldn't because the traction battery was down to only 3 bars, I assume. The engine only ran for 4-5 seconds than I shut it off, washed it and waxed it. Left it outside, temperature was about 55 degrees. When I went to start it about 2 hours later to run an errand it felt like the engine was down a cylinder and I shut it off immediately. I waited a minute and it restarted just fine. After reading the threads about the "rough start" I believe it happened because I didn't let it run through all the necessary cycles during the prior start up. What do you guys think?
Yep. The new manifold doesn't fix the issue either. Just this morning I back my car out, let it idle for 30 seconds then drove off. About a half mile later at a stop sign it started knocking pretty bad. No codes but first time it has done this while driving. Scan gauge showed the temp (FTW) as 104. In my case the knocking since the TSB seems to be getting worse. Now to capture a video of this knocking event while driving.
db After following these discussions and having two episodes myself, I think it is related to humidity. My second event happened after the car sat 20 min. after a 30 min highway drive. So the ICE was fully warm.
Since Toyota has put out a TSB for this problem, I doubt they will address this issue any further. I'm guessing they don't know how to fix the problem. Not sure the long term effects on the engine but it sure doesn't sound good when it happens.
The two times that I experienced the rough start when I first got the car was identical to yours. I moved it from garage to driveway and shut it off after just a few seconds of running. My workaround has been to always let the ICE complete the warmup cycle before turning off. I have not had another issue since.
This happened to me once. Same deal. Incomplete ICE warn up. Must be running super rich and shutting it down prematurely allow fuel foul up plugs.
