Here's the e-mail that I received from LAX parking office today (I printed out the email and I'm keeping a few copies in my car to show/give to the parking attendants if they don't know about the free parking):

Yes, free parking for your Prius is available in parking structures 1 & 6, arrivals level only for a maximum of 30 days.

    Thank you,

Subject: free parking for plug-in Prius?

    Hello,

I own a 2012 Prius Plug-in hybrid car. Do I qualify for free parking in structures 1 and 6?

    Thank you,

Does the LAWA Parking page specify the Prius? Anyone with a link?

I parked in Lot 6 for approximately 29 days. My only recommendation is to make sure you are in the correct garage before you park (ideally pass by the chargers (on the arrival level) and confirm it is the correct garage BEFORE you park. As others have noted the cashier will call over a supervisor to confirm the non-payment. They had no issues with approving the Prius Plug In. The supervisor did make EXTRA sure that I had not exceeded the 30 day maximum though.

Since I was parked for such an extended period of time I did not selfishly take up a charging spot, but did move the car and charge up while waiting for baggage.

Also, be advised that next to lot 6 there is construction that is going on, near the center of the airport, so park on the inner stalls if possible (my car was extra filthy when I left (covered with sprayed fireproofing material applied to the steel skeleton of the building next door)).

My only question is why they are taking down all of our car and personal info. Is it to track our total time parked at LAX and see if someone is 'abusing' the privilege?

Again, from the Los Angeles World Airports website (
    LAX - Parking
    ):
"Free parking is available for electric vehicles only at charging stations located in the lower/arrivals level of Parking Structures 1 and 6 for up to a maximum of 30 days per visit."

I agree with your point about personal information. I can't possibly see what they need with the info on my driver's license or my phone number. Very strange.

Good news. I am the guy who had to pay $180. Thanks to stu lb I got the name of Sandy Calderon. Called her and she said send me the receipt. She also said all of the booths now have the Prius on their list of approved vehicles. No more hassles.

Anyone else see Long Beach's airport's website states there are no charging stations for electric cars but parking is free? Has anyone tried it yet? Going Wednesday and will give it a try.

Parking is free for pure electric cars, but not for the PIP.

Instead of pre paying, drove to the cash gate and said, electric cars get free parking right? He said yes but... And I interrupted him and said, not a regular Prius, it's a plug in. He said ok, filled out a form with name, etc, he called it in and I was on my way. Not sure if it will be that every time as I asked how long can you park for free, the attendant said I have no clue.

I think you got lucky. The people at LGB with whom I spoke told me specifically that the plug-in Prius could not park for free; the car has to be pure electric. Maybe they've changed their rules, but I think you just got lucky!

Just returned from a week away and got free parking at LAX in lot P1. I will say though that I can't believe they are going to keep this forever because there were a TON of electric cars there, clearly all parking there for free. And I can't for the life of me figure out why they need to take down our phone number and drivers license info. Neither the gal at the booth or the guy she waved over could explain it either. They just said it was company policy. Sort of weird.

Does anybody know if they have more level 2 chargers installed at LAX? I'm going there tonight and want to charge while i'm on my trip?

Lot 6 is always full. When I returned from my last trip there was a spot open so I had to move, plug in, go in for coffee and hang out with my laptop for an hour.

I've usually had more success finding available charging spots at Lot 1. Maybe one reason is that the charging spaces are outside of the parking structure, and somewhat difficult to find. LAX needs to provide a lot more spaces for you to charge your car.

Btw, I've used Lot 1 at LAX twice now with no real hassles at the booth on the way out. I still think it's weird that they take down your driver's license # and phone # but oh well. I like free parking!

It is for auditing purposes most likely. Otherwise the attendant would allow his/her friends to park free, etc.
