Just purchased a new 2012 Prius (technically a PiP but this question is more general) and I have a few modifications I want to make that need a switch to control them that mounts in the blanks on the dash. I would like more of a factory look (even thinking about getting the switch silk screened with what it is used for) but after I scoured the forums and the web and didn't find anything that seemed to fit right or was super outdated! Thoughts?
A search on eBay (Toyota dash switches) yielded several switches. Here's one auction: 1996 Toyota RAV4 Dash Switches 3 Each | eBay
Hmmm I don't know if those will fit the Prius, I was hoping someone has found something aftermarket that seemed to work well, there must be something out there!
The only switch I have found was from the OEM fog Light Kit. That comes with a switch that looks and fits oem.
I'm also looking for a switch for the dash... I've read that thread referred to in post #5, not really a good fit. There's got to be something that will fit properly in those blanks....
There is a Yaris fog light switch that fits the opening, in case that is cheaper. EDIT: What is the part number of the switch that goes in there? I just found this general looking plain switch, they claims Totyota OEM like for $8.65 maybe call them and confirm the size. It does look nice. They also carry this one for Toyota OEM like fog light switch $9.00. Here's another one at ozium for scion $9.99. I read the OEM switches are made by Cole-Hersee here is a great site of all of the switches they have. Toyota.part.com $9.29 Switch Dash fog light. Here's another idea, Cole-Hersee does make a Bezel Self Mounting part that could work to better mount a smaller switch and still look OEM. We still need to find the correct size bezel for the opening. OK, now lets get Fancy. This might work. Pilot Touch Screen Switch from Pep Boys. It's bright but a resister can fix that. Here's a youtube on it. I have not tried these but it's a good start. If you get one let us know. my2cents.
Those look pretty good, but the shipping cost kills it for me. This one and the other colors linked at the bottom of the page seem to be a good fit. One of the comments said it will go in a Toyota (4Runner) dash blanks with a little bit of filing at some ridges inside the dash cutouts. Daystar KU80013 20 Amp Amber Light Rocker Switch Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive Edit: I ordered a green one for my DRL project. I'll post back with a comment on how difficult it was to install in the dash cutout. Edit 2: Here's a link to some customer images of the switch installed: Customer Image Gallery for Daystar KU80011 20 Amp Blue Light Rocker Switch Kit
For those of you are handy you can always do what this guy did. He added a switch to the back of a blank to make it work and look OEM. By the way they do have cool stenciling on those aftermarket console switch covers. My favorite is the switch that reads PURSUIT MODE.
rrg, that looks really good. However, I don't think I am willing to go through that much trouble for an OEM look.
I got the green Daystar switch from Amazon linked above. It looks "industrial", though, definitely wouldn't pass for OEM. I haven't tried to install it yet.
The Gen3 switch mounting holes are recessed (when you pop out the blank) so finding a switch that will mount in the panel hole and be flush with the dash is not easy.
I found that out. I returned the Daystar switch I linked above because I would've had to grind the recessed "shoulders" away for it to fit. I bought a smaller illuminated rocker switch and actually mounted it within the blank that came out of the dash. Had to grind away the end 2/3 of the blank and all of the inside ribbing to do it.
For anyone searching for a switch and landing on this thread..... The Scion switch does NOT fit, with dremeling of the switch. I'm not gonna Dremel the car! The OEM ventilator switch looks promising (8489-47010) however, don't be fooled by the websites that you can order it from online. They will eventually tell you that it has been "discontinued." You CAN order it through a dealership, but it comes on a boat from Japan. You will need to find a dealership who is willing to take the time to do this.
This family of switches from Air On Board will fit just fine. Drawback is, they have a large selection of pre-engraved legends/clipart to choose from, but they do not offer engraving of a legend/art you supply, or a blank switch front for you to engrave yourself. Switches from rockerswitchpros can be custom engraved, but last I checked with them, they didn't carry this size and weren't interested in adding it. -Chap
