I brought my prius v back to the dealer for the fourth time because of the groaning noise from the rear brakes. I was told that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are designing a new rear brake. They expect it to be ready for installation after January 1st, 2013. Let's hope it isn't too far after the first of the year.
Occasionally I get noisy brakes, but only if the car has sat for a few days, or has been out in the rain. It goes away after a few applications, so I'm not concerned about it, although it is worse than in my previous car, a 2003 Accord. Sounds like your problem is different.
I also have the groaning noise - started out only in the mornings, then all the time - bought in May. Service department "can't hear the noise" but I'm going in for another service this week and will figure out what the story is. from them.
Do you ever clean your brakes by braking in neutral? Prius brakes get dirty and rusty from lack of use, and that will make them noisy. On an empty road, get up to 45 or so, shift into N, and brake moderately until you slow to 20 or so. Shift back into D and repeat two or three times. See if that helps. Tom
All the time but after I run it through a car wash the groaning noise disappears for one or two days and then comes back.
We are experiencing this as well. I have an appointment tomorrow. I will let you know if I find out anything different.
I get this groaning too but its only upon the first few minutes of use. and its only when I am making a right or left turn. It isnt a constant groaning, more like every revolution i hear a groan then nothing and then another groan again. This happens more frequently when its damp outside or high humidity. Anyone else have these similar symptoms?
Yeah, a whole lot of us! See the "2012 Prius v Groaning Noise" thread on the Prius v Technical Discussion Forum.
