Who doesn't want a new car anyway after 10 years or so? I'm thinking the 2022 Prius is going to be BADASS :)

Years ago a coworker named Ivan always bought cars that had 100k miles of use:
"It ain't proven itself until 100k miles".
This was in the mid 1970's.

Many people have excuses for irrational behavior. I had not heard that one before.

My thoughts exactly. Only buying cars with 100K miles on them just to find out if they "prove themselves" doesn't sound like a very good financial investment :)

A car is never an investment in any circumstance. It is a depreciating asset. On the contrary it is much wiser financially to buy a used car than a new one.

It depends what your time is worth. Buying someone elses car with 100,000 miles on it, is going to cause problems, likely is going to need repairs. If you don't care that these come at inconveient times, well go right ahead.

That is quite different than driving your car until it has problems. Here you know what is going on and how it has been maintained. I had my last car through 150,000 but I wasn't shopping for someone else's problems.

For sure :) It is a very high resolution display and the audio system makes it like being inside a theater. I recommend it to anyone with the 7.1 system if they have the time to sit around for a movie. I don't know if the 6.1 system plays DVD movies or not.

Sure hope I can live that long. Maybe I'll still have my first Prius :)

So you're saying you have to the performance package for it to be able to play DVD's?

Nah, just the 7.1 audio system. It is possible the 6.1 system plays DVD's but I have never tested one to find out :(

I don't believe cars are engineered these days to last that long. I believe the lifetime of 150,000 is the norm in the testing these days.

Reading luscious garage blog gives me impression of lots of failures at 200,000-300,000 miles (but mostly city miles I guess, a big difference):
Luscious Garage | Blog | Prius Taxi Repair

However, I'm not worried, as I tend to put 100,000 miles on my cars in 10 years.

We're not talking about cars in general, we're talking about a Toyota Prius. My 2004 is at 231k miles and running strong.

Short answer: As long as one can find parts to repair the Prius (and you can find someone to repair it) , then your Prius should continue to work forever.[1]

Long answer: If you follow the reasoning of the video[1] on Irv Gordon then replacing broken or worn out parts is key to keeping your vehicle working over 1 million miles. Given that the Prius is the most popular hybrid in the world - the demand for Prius replacement parts should keep Toyota and their suppliers very busy well into 2040 if not longer. For example, I recently lost a cherished Sony shuttle edit VCR was because I couldn't find a replacement part for it. I'm currently exploring 3-D printing tech /services to see if I can manufacture my own replacement parts... If I can get a 3-D scanner to provide the imput to a 3-D printer I think I'll have a working solution. One of the reasons, nobody makes parts for it is that it is considered obsolete technology ( not worth saving/repairing). So the real question is when will people stop making parts for the Prius (because they consider the Prius obsolete and not worth saving). Technology wise - when will the Prius look obsolete and not worth saving? When gasoline is over $10 per gallon or $20 per gallon and you can't afford to drive it? Or when you can't buy gasoline for the love of Mike. When 100 mpg conventional gas cars like the X-Prize Edison2 VLC become common? Or when BEV start using Air Lithium batteries and are charged in a nanosecond with a bolt of lightning ( you get a 20 meter lightning rod and an ultra cap when you need a Back to the Future jumpstart) ? My bet (and I have put my own money down so this is a biased assessment) - is that my 2010 Prius will still be worth saving in 2025 when many of its contemporaries 2010 models will be assigned to the scrap heap.:coffee:

[1] I suppose you are referring to the video below?

Nova ScienceNow: Can We Live Forever?
    Duration 53:07 premiere Date 1/26/2011
Chapter 1 of 5: Can my car live forever?
    time 2:00-7:00

    car: 1966 Volvo P-1800S
Odometer: 2,721,000 miles as of August 2009 ( currently the vehicle has +3 million miles on it)
owner: Irvin Gordon of East Patchogue, New York, USA (original owner)
driving pattern: Mainly highway driving. When Gordon bought his car he had a 125 mile round trip daily commute as a Science teacher. He is currently retired. In addition, a signficant number of the miles on the vehicle were made via interstate road trips.
Gordon credits the following for the longvity of his vehicle
    (time sequence location: 4:07- 6:50 )
    1) Regular maintenance - do what the suggested maintenance schedule says to do when the schedule says it should be done. For Gordon, this means he has used 110 tires, 440 spark plugs, 788 oil filters, & 3143 quarts of oil.
    2) if it is broken then fix it - replace worn out parts or broken parts as soon as possible. For Gordon, this means replacing 3 clutches, countless brakes and mufflers, and having the engine rebuilt twice (@680,ooo miles and in 2009)

    Yeah, but that's a Packard.

At 20000 miles a year it would take 50 years. I would expect the electronics to be shot, the plastics to be brittle or deteriorated, and if the traction battery lasts that long it will certainly shut up the critics. However, I'm sure enough things will fail that maintenance or restoration won't be viable. If the million mile car does or will exist it won't be original & it won't be stock.

I had 2 Honda Civics One a CRS-SI 2 seater that I drove 10 years and 150K+- miles. The second was a Civic Sedan I drove for 4 years and my daughter drove for 6 years and it had 150K +- miles. The first car was in an accident and the safety was an issue so I traded it in for $500. The second needed some reairs nothing major but my daughter graduated college and was working and wanted a new car. I drove a BMW 325I 7 years and 110K miles but I sold it. The BMW is a solid car but the cost to keep it on the road was just not worth it. It was painfull every time the mechanic said that will cost $1,200. I'm sure a Prius can go the distance as good as the best of them but do you want to look at the same dash for a million miles?

102 and she still changes the oil in the car. Amazing indeed.
