Finally got power back after 14 days and online again.

My prius got flooded on my driveway during the storm surge. Water was about the line btw the two glove compartment upper was dry lower was full.

It was an eary sight seeing the water rise in ten minutes from the curbside to the half of the car height. Also if anyone can explain this ... about third way the car lights came on and the emergency blinking started and went on for quite some time about 5 minutes at least ... then went off ...

Thankfully my insurance covers it as total loss and will receive more money than the current loan and some plus ...

If anyone can direct me to a reasonable site for quote on prius 2012 ... I am in Long Island and I want to be prepared for the price negotiation for a new car ... not sure how the supply is these day ... if any dealer online would appreciate a quote ..

    Cheers.

PS had damage to the house but nothing like you could see in Long Beach or Staten Island or the Rockaways. No heat electric for 14 days thanks LIPA and the snow storm and there was no power line down within 5 blocks within my house really strange ...

The PIP has a good rebate. It is about personal choice. I would get pricing from 3 dealers when you know the model, color and options you want.

I think the lights coming on are a safety precaution to warn pedestrians that the car may slide? Pretty cool feature if so.

you mean the plug in version ... that is 10G more than the base model I had ... and unless I can charge at the garage while I work I can NEVER get that investment back .... gas must rise to 7.00 before it is economical for me (about 50 miles daily to work)

but happy to hear others opinion...

the PiP costs just a few hundred more than a 2012 Prius Three. In New York there was, and I believe still is, a $3,500 cash back 0% APR special on the PiP, then you get an additional $2,500 credit to your federal taxes. Plus the dealers have their own dealer discounts they add on top, so it may not be as much of a price difference as you think

About 1/3 of that commute will cost about 30 cents of electricity at typical off peak rates. The rest will be a standard hybrid 48/50 MPG. Just a suggestion. In the end you will get what you want. I purchased the 2012 4 w solar roof. Like it a lot. My next car will be the PIP in about 3 years or so for sure. They seem to be the happiest of the bunch. The C is the lowest cost but not much room in the car.

That is incredible report to think we still have Prius Chat participants just now chiming back in as power is restored after Sandy. If you are interested in PiP you may be able to get a deal something like $27000 before adding TTL. With Federal Tax credit you are talking possible $24500 on a PiP. Deal deadline was Nov 5 but now it still seems available. Let us know if you need assist finding dealer as we have had a number of NY'ers getting pretty good deals. Also figure in LIPA $500 credit for PiP (despite the bad press re: LIPA).

I wonder if that was the anti-theft device being triggered, or something like that. If the water shorted something out, the car may have thought it was being tampered with? Just a thought. That must have been awful to watch the water rising so fast!!

The PIP is the best deal going currently for any Prius..
$3'500 off and 0% financing for 60months with Toyota financing.
$2'500 fed tax credit on your 2012 Income Tax (if your Fed tax burden was $7'500, now it's $5'000)
    $500 LIPA rebate.

You can get the PIP for $32'500 (or less) out on the Island, now subtract that $6'500 sited above- and you get the PIP for $26K.
During this whole gas shortage thing on the Island- I never waited on a gas line with the PIP. It's got about 10gal usable fuel- I get 88mpg (mixed with EV) so one tank gets me almost 900mi out of one fillup with the PIP!

If you spend some time reading the PIP posts you get the sense quickly that this group is the most satisfisfied. No buyers regret.

Oh that sounds sweet .... I may not be able to "realize" the tax credit with my situation (working for an international organization) if it is rebate then yes. No time to figure that out. I may just stick with the regular hybrid for this time..

I was planning to keep this card 5+ at least (two more years) and then consider PIP as next step, hoping by then charging stations will be widespread and standardized.

    But still considering it.

A chemical scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, Daniel Abraham, explained to the New York Times that the salt in seawater is more conductive than drinking water. That salt breaks down into positive and negative ions that could have connected the positive and negative terminals of the batteries, leading to a short circuit.“If you connect the positive and negative terminals with a wire, it will short the battery and generate tremendous heat in the process.”According to the New York Times Wheels blog, three Toyota Prius hybrids also got very hot following submersion by floodwater in Port Newark. Only one of those caught fire, however.“One Prius out and out burned, the others just kind of smoldered and got really hot. … [It was] likely started because saltwater got into the electrical system.” If the car was completely submerged in salt water, it is almost certainly going to be written off by the insurance company and should be avoided. Salt water is very corrosive and will eventually weaken and destroy not only the frame and body but also the electronics of the vehicle.

Have you tried CarWoo for price quotes? I'd suggest doing that for both regular and PiP, then factor in the tax credits.

I wonder if your local dealerw will take advantage of the situtation in their pricing? In addition to 3 local dealers, try one or two way out of the affected area.
