Pete, if you live in an area with lots of rain I would consider the PureContact with EcoPlus. They ride a bit rougher than the other tires but they have crazy wet traction! If you don't live in a rain forest then the Bridgestone Serenity Plus would be a very well rounded choice but likely 1mpg behind the PureContact. The EP422 is for max mpg.

I noticed that TireRack has completed their testing of the EP422 and Assurance Fuel Max tire in snow conditions. The EP422 came out on top for snow and the Fuel Max did best on ice. :) Interestingly the ProContact with EcoPlus didn't do that great on snow or ice despite the amazing wet/dry traction.

Good on ice is handy as that might help delay the switch in winter. On the roads I drive I'm more likely to deal with ice than snow. I have Fuel Max on my Prius now. The tires feel a little floaty in wet conditions, but I can't complain about the wet mileage. ;)

I assume this even means the OEM Fuel Max's? If so, then great!

Personally I will be using the Prius more on ice (unless it is extremely slick) and my truck in any snow.

They were testing with the aftermarket version of the tire. The OEM tires are made to different specs so I would think that the results may be different. It's hard to really say though.

If they didn't honor the rebate I was going to trade in my Bridgestones for a set of ComforTread 205/50/17s. They have an $80 rebate plus the $100 and they are not XL rated. LOL The nice manager at the Woodland store hooked me up with the rebate on my Ecopias so I didn't have to go all The Critic on them. ;)

What is the warranty on original tires for PRius 2010? How many miles do they warrant those tires? My dealers wants to do balancing for the tires every 10k or something, I wonder if I should allow them to do so.

There is not a warranty that I know of. The tread wear rating is fairly low so if you get 40k out of them you are doing well.

You have to wait until they offer them. You just missed the big one ($100) at Discount Tire. Costco almost always has either the Michelin or Bridgestone $70 rebate.

What is your tread depth? If you are under 4/32nds going into the wet season then I would replace the, soon. Don't go by tread warranty, go out and actually measure your tread depth. :) if you don't have a depth gauge then use a quarter!

Pretty sure my OEM's have a 60k warranty on them.

    edit...now I can't find the material where I read that...maybe I dreamed it :/

Here is the official web page for the new Bridgestone Ecopia EP001S which is available in European and Japanese markets.it is supposedly more efficient than the EU version of the Energy Saver+. It's the first tire to receive an A/A rating for fuel efficiency and wet traction. I sure hope something like this comes to North America!

Studless don't have metal studs sticking out of them. Historically, studded tires were much much better on ice but worse on clear roads and studs damage roads. Some states have outlawed studded tires due to the damage they do to roads.

Modern studless tires do just as well on ice or nearly so but do MUCH better in snow and dry/wet conditions. Handling and noise are also much better than studded tires.

So unless you live on an iceberg there is no real reason for studded tires anymore. :p

I just had a set of Michelin Defenders installed at 59,800 miles on my 2010 Prius III (bought new in June 2009). They are softer than the Goodyear Triple Tread Assurance tires (that I had installed in place of the Yokohamas at 100 miles over concern about hydroplaning on Long Island's wet roads), but still seem to handle well. Overall they are quieter than the Goodyears. My only problem is a specific noise, a droning that is very pronounced between 35 and 40 mph. I wonder if this is just my new tires breaking in, or something else.

    Hello,

Just got the Conti's for my 2010. What tire pressure would you guys recommend?

It should go away once they are broken in. The noise may be coming from the little nubs that wear down quickly.
