Inexpensive parking assist

    According to this info taken from their website it sounds like you get a solid tone at 0.5m. Is this true? Can it be adjusted to switch tone at a shorter distance?

    It's incorrectly mentioned at their site (or maybe model had been modified).

    Kit I received behaving more like usual ultrasonic sensor kit, i.e. double bip when you engage reverse (mapping), then start beeping at about 0.8 m with increasing frequency as the car closing to the obstacle, at about 15 cm - continuous beep.

    Dear BOA8. Regarding "...installation had been done by Toyota after-sales service" ...can you share how much Toyota charged to install the kit?

    Service of Toyota is ridiculously expensive here in Switzerland.
    They charged me SFr. 500 (USD 388) for work which includes EPS installation, headlight bulb change and some other minor things.

    I don't think it's representative of US charges.

    I recommend you (1) to ask your dealer what's the cost of one hour (enough for installation) of their work (2) send them installation instruction for more precise quote (3) bargain closer to the first figure.

    Alternatively, ask your DIY-savvy friend to install it. It's not so difficult, unless my broken ankle I would do it myself.

    Is this RADAR?

    Anyone understand how this works? Since it's a radio antenna, I'm assuming it uses radio waves, and hence it's technically doing RADAR, timing how long it takes for the first reflection of the radio pulse to return. What I'm unclear about is how it can work without being a point source. It's measuring the time for the signal to go to the antenna, out, hit an outside object, come back, into antenna, back to the receiver. I don't see how it could distinguish between a very close object at the far end of the antenna, versus an object roughly an antenna's length away from the end near the antenna's connection. The reflection time would be the same in both cases.

    The idea I had is perhaps it transmits from one end of the antenna and receives from the other end. That would cause the reflection times to be independent of which end the reflection occurs at. But the picture on the website looks like there is only one connection to the antenna.

    Just being curious here :)

    I think :idea: there are 2 steps:

    1) when you engage reverse system is *mapping* everything around - 360 degrees (you hear double bip at initiation).
    2) when you start moving back it is tracking distance *differences* vs. memorized map.

    Therefore, car itself, incl. bumper cover are static vs. antenna, but obstacles behind are closing which trigger warning beep with increased frequency.

    Nope, it doesn't use ultrasonic, infrared, RF. It uses magnetic waves or should I say electromagnetic waves? I actually have this kit but it is co-branded in another name and someone in Japan sent to me years ago. I believe it's made in Italy originally. Once I get the chance to install it on my '05 Prius, I will let you guys know. Or I may change my mind & use some other kits, still deciding.
