I have been looking for an official date but have not found one. However, I have heard from a couple sources within Toyota that they are already in production in Japan, so however long it takes for them to get made and over here on the boat. Probably within the next 30 days.
Why would you buy a 2013 PIP when the incentives are so good for a 2012? Will they offer such a good deal for the 2013 cars? I heard there are not many differences between the two model years. Thanks
I got confirmation from the dealer today that my 2013 plug-in has been produced and is "on sea", so I know they're in production now.
Actually, as far as public statements are concerned, there are supposed to be zero differences. Including pricing (unlike liftback which is getting a slight price hike).
I read that there is zero difference between the 2012 and 2013 PIP (including the MSRP). However, as with any vehicle purchase, there is a big risk in buying a model year-end due to the one extra year of depreciation. For example in this case, you have to be certain that the discount you can get on the 2012 makes up that one-year difference in depreciation. Ultimately, the longer you keep the car, the less it will matter. But take the extreme example if you end up parting with the PIP after just one year: According to Edmunds the Prius depreciates about 20% the first year, and 8% the second year. Let's say the car cost $32,000. After one year, the 2012 will be worth $23,040, while the 2013 will be worth $25,600 - a difference of $2,560 due simply to a difference of one model year. So really the question is do you think you can get a 2012 for at least $2,560 less than you could a 2013? Maybe so with the incentives. But there's always that risk, since you don't know right now what you can get a 2013 for. Or is there? Swanny: Did you already strike a deal for a 2013? Did the dealer let you take advantage of the incentives? I was under the impression this was not possible.
There are no incentives here in Canada. I will pay over $40,000 with tax for my base Plugin. $37,265 (with freight) + tax & fees. And there are no federal or provincial rebates. Still, the PHV is cheaper than the CMax Energi and Volt.
Took a friend of my sister over to the Toyota dealership I buy from, the incentive in MA is $3,500 cash back from Toyota, I also negotiated nearly another $1,000 off as well (they had 6 PiPs in inventory, I knew they had to move them). Then add in the $2,500 she will get back on her 2012 Federal taxes (which won't be a long wait either), and she bought the base PiP for the same price as a standard Prius package 3. So yes, they do want to move these out, and you get more off than the deprecation (at least on the base model)
