I think she is leaning toward the Toyota but hopefully she will consider some other plug-ins that might fit her driving profile better.

Volt's can be had for under $30K ( $39,950 MSRP, - $3000 dealer incentive, - $7500 federal tax credit, 0% financing).

Also, if you visit the Chevy.com site with pop ups turned on, you can get another $1000 coupon from GM for the Volt as well. Not sure how long that will be running.

 

...it is tied to the elections so that you can drive in EV mode on your way to the polls to vote.
If you drive to the polls using gaso, you will generate more hot air (exhaust) and we already have enough.

 

I have looked at all of the '12 models that are available. IMO, the Prus C is too small. The Prius V is a sharp looking hatchback, but does not have the storage room that the full size Prius has. If you can swing the price of the PIP, that is your best bet. Look at all four of them and then get what you like. Also the Prius C and Prius V has lower MPG than the full size Prius. Bare in mind if you get the PIP, you will need to consider getting a 240 volt charger for the house. You can charge off of 120, but it takes longer.

Totaled? This means you have about graduated from the confines of the Gen-II forum.
I would think the folks over on the c forum can assist this particular question.
Your Gen-II misfortune comes during a time when PiP prices are really good.
If PiP is not right for you, then I am not aware of a rush to get other models, other than your obvious need for wheels. Maybe you could rent a "c" and try it?

The Prius V may not be what you want but I believe that less storage is NOT among its' deficiencies. It is a station wagon, rather than a hatchback, and has significantly more storage space than the standard Gen III Prius hatchback (the one that most closely resembles the Gen II's we all drive). And it doesn't have the split rear window!

 

I take it that trying out an American built hybrid is not an option? Toyota Camry Hybrid or Chevy Volt?

 

I would suggest taking some time to go drive both, as well as the Prius models. Take your tack along and see what works.

 

I think you will find that unless you fold down the back seats, the Prius C is not going to work for you with your tack and stuff. Also, when I looked at the V and compared storage space I was referring to all seats in their normal upright position. Now if you were to lay down the back seats, then yes the V does have a little more room than the full size Prius.

It all depends on what you are looking for, and how many occupants will be in the car.

If you carry lots of "stuff", drop from consideration anything with a trunk. Those are designed mostly for carrying people; not things. Hatchbacks (or wagons) remain the most versatile of all vehicles. For those that REALLY carry "stuff", a minivan is wonderful. All of these body styles readily convert back forth between freight and live organic matter.
