Been lurking here off and on - finally decided to hop onboard. Thanks to all for a great site, and thanks to Toyota for a great car.

Three weeks ago I had my left front wheel bearing replaced on my 2008 Prius pkg. 2, 105K miles. Local mechanic did the work, good guy, has lots of experience but not neccessarily on Prii.

The three lights do not come on during normal hwy. driving, but on the 4-lanes as soon as I hit 75 - they're on. When I slow way down and/or come to a stop, they will turn off. There doesn't seem to be any problem with braking or traction. We didn't go 75 mph for the first couple weeks after the replacement, so we didn't notice the problem for a couple weeks.

When I told my mechanic about it a few days ago, he asked me to see if I could find a code to reset those lights and then get back to him - so here I am.

Other Information: Soon after the replacement, my wife thought she noticed a sound like a rock in the left front hubcap that went away after a while. We do have a gravel driveway, so it didn't really raise any flags at the time. A couple days ago we were slowly turning on pavement and noticed a slight squeal noise coming from the same wheel, but haven't noticed it since.

Questions: 1) How can we reset the lights? 2) Since the lights clear themselves when I slow down, and they aren't on when I stay under 75, will resetting them do any good? 3) Might there be something else to consider?

    1. No need to reset since they go off by themselves
    2. See above
    3. Look at your four tires to make sure they are all the same size. If the tire size is correct, check air pressure and make sure it is correct on all four.

The pressures, in #'s, were: 34, 40, 42, 44. After checking them, I put all the pressures at 44. I was surprised that the 34 reading didn't set off my low tire pressure light - usually it does.

I try to maintain the pressures at 44 because I read on another Priuschat thread that you get maximum mpgs without harming the tires by running maximum tire pressures. It has been difficult to maintain even pressures, especially with the 34 tire.

At the suggestions on yet another pchat thread, I am running 195/60 R15's all around.

Questions: 1) I know I'll need to get up to 75mph again to be sure, but do you think the 10# difference was the problem? 2) Do you have any problems with the max. pressures or the tire sizes I am running?

Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.

    1. Yes.
    2. No problem

In addition, you should raise up the corner of the car that has the tire which registered 34 psi, and slowly rotate the tire (will need to shift gear selector to N if this is a front tire; or release the parking brake if a rear tire.) Look carefully at the tread for a nail or other foreign object. I think you will find something.

You are amazing Patrick. I'd be shocked if you weren't 'right-on' about a cause for the 34psi tire to be leaking air and thus the cause of the error lights at high speed. Is it the VSC detecting oddities at 75+mph?

Yes. The skid control ECU monitors rotation speed of each of the four tires. An underinflated tire will have a smaller circumference compared to the other three and therefore must rotate faster.

The skid control ECU interprets a substantially different tire speed that continues for an extended period as indicative of a problem (perhaps with a tire rotation sensor, for example) and turns on the warning lights so that the driver will recognize that a problem exists.

    Patrick,

Good call on the tire's air leak - had it fixed and it's fine now.

I didn't have a chance to get up to 75mph till yesterday - we don't get on the Interstate much where we are - but I am still triggering the warning lights when I hit 75. I did double-check the tire pressure and I was at 44 psi on all tires. When I slowed to a stop and re-accelerated, the lights turned off.

'Tis a puzzlement. Any other possibilities?

    Hi Ken,

Is it possible that one tire tread is substantially worn more than the others?
Or is it possible your Prius just doesn't want to travel faster than 75 mph for the sake of fuel economy...

Great Reply! And yeah, I don't feel good about hitting 75 - I rarely do unless I'm drafting a larger vehicle at a safe following distance.

I do buy my tires as a set, and I have them rotated every time my oil is changed - they do it for free where I bought my tires. So the tires should be about the same. and since they warranty the tires at the same place I'm pretty sure they would tell me if there was unusual wear on one. Now that I think of it, the tires were rotated a couple days before the wheel bearing was replaced.

One other thing, it's not really a triangle with the exclamation point inside of it, it is a multi-ringed circle with the exclamation point inside it, and it appears just to the left of the ABS & VSC lights.

looking in my in my Prius Brief guide booklet on page 9 it says low fuel level indicator light.
maybe not getting enough fuel at speed

The only way that you can diagnose this problem is to do a health check with Techstream or equivalent.

I'm pretty sure your tone wheel was damaged during the wheel bearing replacement. I have seen this before.

One time my wife drove for 2 days with a tire at 22 psi. I measured it before I refilled it. The tps light was on but did not trigger any other light. And she was driving at 65 mph. This happened twice. Came home and told me I filled it up and checked for nail. No nail.
Happened again the next day. Replaced tire.

I'm with Avi. Pretty obvious the mechanic given the timing of this scenario disturbed the abs sensor.

My guess is the speed sensor is either unplugged, or partially unplugged on that wheel or the plug got damaged while doing the wheel bearing replacement.

had to post on this thread because for some reason i cant seem to figure out how to start a new thread. however i have a 2005 daily driver toyota prius that i recently had the wheel bearings replaced. since doing so when i go about 60mph my (!) light, ABS light and VSC light all come on. but they go off when the car comes to a stop and do not come back on until i reach 60mph+ again. all tires are the same with the same pressure in them. anyone have any ideas? i tried to take it to the dealer but once i stop the lights go out and theres nothing for them to see. has anyone else experienced this issue??? please help. i would like to sell this prius and upgrade to a new one however i cant sell it until i feel it is safe to drive for others. thanks for your help!! welcome!
sounds like they messed up a speed sensor. if you got trouble lights, there should be stored codes.

I wonder if an auto parts store could read those codes or if I'd have to take it to Toyota.

Could the alignment be off after replacing wheel bearing?
I'm having same issue but I didn't replace my wheel bearing. I rented out my car and noticed my alignment is off when I got it back. Happened to the driver while going at high speeds.
