New Prius Plug IN - Extended Warranty and/or Maintenance Plan

Congrats on your new PIP! I just got mine this past weekend. The answer to your questions depends on how long you are planning on keeping the vehicle. Short term, I'd say skip it. Long Term, you'd want the MP because that will automatically save you $$$. IMO skip the EB2B. Happy Driving.

 

My advice would be to skip them both. They are $$ makers for the dealership. I didn't buy it for my '04, and didn't have anything except routine maintenance after the factory warranty expired. I bought the extended warranty on my '06, (7yr/100K mi) and used it only once, after 5 1/2 years/58K miles, to replace the rear hatch struts. Keep in mind that the extended warranty is running right along side the factory warranty for most of that covered 4 years, and over a third of the miles. And the hybrid battery, etc, depending on the state in which you reside, is covered for either 8 years/100K miles, or 10 years/150K (in states that use the Calif Air Resources Board rules.) The sales or finance people use scare tactics to convince you that you need these products, but you really don't. Put that money in a savings account instead, and you'll have it if you need an uncovered repair, and otherwise be way ahead.
With regard to the maintenance plan, the factory is already giving you the first two years/25K miles, whichever comes first. The 5K service only requires fluid checks and tire rotation. At the 10K intervals, you should get an oil and filter change, using synthetic oil, along with the same stuff as the 5K. Ask in the service dept. (not the sales/finance guys) what the cost of the 5K and 10K services is. I'm guessing $20/5K and $60/10K, again depending on where you live. So do the math. They are going to be giving you 5 oil changes ($300) and 5 tire rotations ($100) for your $1200. After the "free" period, you can have service (especially tire rotations) done anywhere, just save your receipts/records, etc. You might also ask for the price of an alignment in the service dept. And ask what they mean by "non-scheduled maintenance". There are no "tune ups" required during the period they would be covering. It sounds like a lot of doubletalk/sales gibberish is going on to convince you to up their profit.
Some of these plans require that you have ALL service done at the selling dealer, so be careful and read everything throughly. A good start is reading the factory warranty and free two year service plan. Finally, the extended warranty plans are available any time up to the expiration of the factory warranty. So if you feel you have had to have a lot of things fixed under that warranty, you can then consider buying an extended plan. Which, btw, are available through Prius Chat at a discount. Been proven over and over these warranties you have to buy are not worth it, especially on a toyota where they are some of the highest rated cars by consumers.

these warranties are like insurance, you pay for them and when you have no problems you never get anything back. Id rather see you stick a few bucks away each month incase you had a major problem.

I for one would never go with one.

I guess Toyota is longer offering the free maintenance package (they were as of 2 weeks ago). I personally would skip it at that cost.

As for the warranty, I paid around $800 for my 2007 RAV4, which upgraded my warranty to 6 years/100,000 miles, so it sounds like that's a bad deal. You can get the extended warranty ANYTIME before the factory warranty expires. I waited until I hit 34,000 miles. I purchased it from an online Toyota rep (believe his name is Troy, and I think he is recommended here as well).

 

I'm with the majority opinion here, skip both offers, pas as you go and you'll end up paying less.

 

On my 05' I had 152,000 miles outside of replacing the water pump I did nothing but routine maintenance.
