Hi all. I was just offered a new 2012 Prius 3 with mats, lower body molding, door edge guards and rear bumper applique for $27,391 out the door (incl. taxes and all other charges), along with $20K for my 2010 Prius II basic model that has less than 17K miles on it. (So this new car would cost me about $7300.) My sense is that this is a very good price, as other dealers have not offered as much for my car and have not offered to include the guards/molding/applique in that price. I'd appreciate your sense of whether this is a good deal.
No because you will also need to pay tax title and license for the new car which even with the trade in will almost be an extra 1k. You have a car still under warranty and basically brand new and you are paying over 8k for not much.
You had a 2010 with 17K miles? Doesn't sound like you drive very much. It also doesn't sound like you have many other things to spend your money on....like savings and retirement. The 2010 is a G3. The 2012 is a........G3. Sounds to me like you paid seven large for some plastic bits and some options, and to roll the odometer back 17K miles on what is the same car. Actually.....it's a helluva good deal!!! ...for the dealer! They'll be able to sell a 2010 G3-two with 17k miles for 19,999.99 out there in the PRC in pretty short order with $5/gal gas.....so basically they were able to move a '12-three for $27K. No...I don't think that they're scratching their heads wondering how you bested them at the bargaining table. Sorry...but you asked. If you're only knocking down about 6,000 miles a year? Keep this one for about 10 years...PAY IT OFF EARLY, and stay off the new car lots for a while. The good news? Since it's the same car? You already know a lot about it. No need to re-read the owner's manual.
We have a 2010 basic Prius with leather seats and just overt 10K. Perhaps we could trade it in for a 2012 and walk away with a couple bucks in our pocket. We find that we burn less gas if we spend more time polishing the Prius than driving it.
Hi cellogail, The price they are offering for the new Prius is somewhat good as I got my III for the same price (mine otd including ttl was ~28000 and I have the sunroof package and is the blizzard pearl but doesn't have some of the things yours has such as body molding and the applique). If yours has the options you've indicated AND has the sunroof package, then I say that's a VERY good price for the vehicle otd. As for what they are offering you for the $20k for the 2010 with 17k is actually a decent offering as well, especially a base II. I won't question your judgement as to why you would be switching so soon as that is up to you, but all in all I think you're getting a fair deal. Not a GREAT one, but a fair one. I'm sure with a little more haggling you can bring it down a little more.
The 2012 Prius makes the 2010/11 Prius look ancient. Plenty of changes to make it a way nicer car. If you got the bucks and the desire to spend it, go for it. You'll like the improvements in the 2012 over that '10. Mike
I don't know about that. New taillights and a center console lid? The Five actually lost feature like the water beading windshield, the party favorite self parking feature, and the ion generator. You may argue these features are moot but they are nevertheless gone. One thing I do dig with the 2012s is the trip summary report on power down.
The rule of thumb is, the cheapest car to operate, is the one you are driving now. There are rare exceptions, such as going from a Rolls Royce to a Prius and pocket the change and save gas. Most people trade cars out of wants, not needs. The serial car trader I know lease, and don't worry about getting good deals.
Yea that summary is neat to see Glass water sheddin is EZ, I got a case of some spray on stuff that goes on & wipes off and lasts a month easily. Neat stuff. No wipers needed I should add though that my Prius told me one day she is allergic to rain drops so I don't drive her in inclement weather. That's what my SUV is for Taillights on the '12 are damn nice looking day or night. Center console is a huge improvement. Audio system is nice. Entune is a joke. Softex and 8 way drivers seat is damn cool. LED daytime running lights look amazing. Front bumper looks freakin cool. Backup camera is a huge safety must have. That air cleaner button works excellent. I don't know what all it entails but it absolutely makes all stinks, even skunk smells, go away instantly and for good. To me the 2012 is way more refined than the 2010/11 was. Mike
I can't make a comparison because the 2012 is my first, but I agree fully with your assessment of the features on the 2012, especially the laughable Entune.
I quit using Entune the last couple times I drove my car. More relaxing now without that garbage software Mike
