For a $7500 reduction in cost I'd hypermile my arse from NY back to California! Actually, for that much in savings I wouldn't mind speeding a little. ;)

Well, compared to a CA purchase, it's only a 2k reduction via TFS. All the other rebates apply even if you buy local :)
The other thing to keep in mind though is that since cars are selling so poorly there and there are no incentives like HOV, the dealer might be willing to discount the car more as well. So you could potentially have 2k reduction from TFS on top of another 2k reduction from the dealer. That might make the trip worth it :)

OK good F8L perhaps this is deal you've been waiting for. You can visit Prius Chat members all the way.

You trying to get me killed?

So wait, you could buy a car in NY and get the big rebates even though you live in Cali? Obviously you will pay sales tax for where the car is registered.

I have been calling dealers here in New York about a 2012 base plug in, they are not willing to budge at all on the price, and they are also not being up front about the rebate, one dealer told me there was no rebate, on further questioning he told me it was only on a lease, when I told him that the website lists the rebate clearly on a finance then his excuse was that it must have been changed recently! This is getting so frustrating!

If this idea would pan out I would talk to Paradox and see who he purchased from? :)

With $3,500 cash bonus and $2,500 tax credit, Prius PHV base is about $1k more expensive than a Prius III.

It is a very good deal.

El Dobro - do you think this deal is still good?
F8L is thinking of hypermiling his arse (I mean 2012 Prius trade-in) up here, and Curious in NY, Trent in PA are looking too.

Meanwhile we need a Moderator to put *hypermiling* in the PC spell checker, this is PriusChat you know.

Hi Raimix, may ask which dealership is this? I am trying to buy a base plug in too in New York/long island and queens area, but getting very frustrating and conflicting quotes from dealers here. Would really appreciate any help, thanks. Is the 31000 after the $2000 rebate?

As far as the CVRP is concerned, yes. As long as the car never gets registered in NY (or any other state) before being registered in CA, you're fine.
I have this in writing over email if you want it.

Any money off MSRP? If not, I'd argue that's too much, $1500 is just the standard SoCal TFS rebate

We have a number of related threads going (very nice interchange of ideas):
Planning to buy 2012 prius plug in this month, any advice? | PriusChat
Federal and State Incentives for Plug-Ins, EV's | PriusChat
Toyota Offering 0% + $2000 Back On PIP | PriusChat
Price Paid on PIP? | PriusChat

    Key points from my perspective:
    • Toyota trying to get these PiPs off lots (big sale see Buyatoyota.com) up to $3500 off w/ 0%
    • Our "sticky post" mission to find the best state incentives is not yet completed, but some of us are thinking at least one Northeast state might be as high as $7500 state incentive
    • Keep in mind, for 2012 PiP is only offered in certain states so you may need to make a pilgrimage to a state that sells PiPs. Be sure to call ahead before you make the pilgrimage, I don't know much about out-of-state car purchasing.
I am impartial observer, just having fun with this, not even looking for a PiP (but may start looking if the cost gets any lower). I am concluding the slow Plug-in/EV sales is partially related to lack of knowledge of $2500 federal + state + utility incentives. Even many dealers seem clueless on it, and may be turning away buyers by erroneously advising that there are no more gov't incentives.

Soooo.... I really wish I had remained ignorant of this $3500 cash back deal. I bought mine a month ago with $2000 cash back. Drat. Does anyone have advice on who I could suck up to try and recoup some of the difference? I'm going to start with my dealer, but sounds like I'd need to get through to someone fairly high up in TFS.

...be sure to check Buyatoyota.com for your zip code....my understanding is the amount varies. The key thing you want to look at is out the door OTD price for your area; sometimes the numbers are confusing mumbo jumbo.

Just FYI, I work in Syracuse, just can't mention where. Just delivered a PIP to guy in Michigan, traded his 09 prius 5. I think that they reason that TFS and TMS is throwing money at these is that they overshot the demand. PIP is similarly equipped to a Prius 3 and costs $5000 to $6000 more.

If you are successful at price-match / recoup any difference please do share !
