Hey bro. I took your advice and created a new fuelly for the final setup since the other one was filled with mostly testing tanks and different tires.

I didn't change much except the Energy Saver A/S tires. I learned how to drive the car better and the summer temps are the reason behind the 60+mpg tanks. I notice a marked improvement when temps are over 60F and things get really cooking when temps are over 100F.

 

I didn't realize that you traded the Ascends in for Energy Saver A/S tires. I'm shocked that you are getting that much better mpg. I wish that you had kept the same Fuelly though, I never said to start a new one. I think it's best to see a lifetime for the car & then Fuelly keeps a running average of your last 10 tanks to follow any trends.

Hello F8L: Maybe a question already answered previously, but what is the best tire pressure to run on MXM4 P215 45R17 tires for best tire mileage?

Steve, the benefits of increased tire pressure seems to plateau somewhere between 45psi and 50psi. There are many variables that come into play when determining the best pressure for mpg and they are constantly changing. No one pressure is the best for all conditions. My rough rule of thumb is:

High speeds/smooth roads = 45-50psi
High speeds/rough roads = 36-45psi
Low speeds/smooth road = 45-60psi
Low speeds/rough road = 40-45psi.

I found I liked the MXM4 at somewhere between 40psi and 45psi but I lean towards 40psi because higher pressures didn't seem to help much and comfort/safety is ultimately more important than mpg. The truth is, unless you are a low speed hypermiling hero like Wayne Gerdes, super high pressure is not going to help a whole lot and in some cases it could actually be worse for mpg (high speed and rough roads).

My advice is to choose something between 38psi and 45psi and see how it works for you.

Just to give other potential PLUS wheel owners some reassurance, I just got back from a Seattle to Portland road trip with the wife and averaged 54.1 mpg (indicated) while going 70-80mph. This is definitely the highest average I've ever achieved with my PLUS wheels / non-LRR tires. This time around I inflated the tires to 43/41.

Yessir. Anything above 43 and the wife starts to question why she can hear/feel every expansion joint on the freeway.

That is probably the most fuel efficient combo you can purchase in a 17" size. Unfortunately the tires have been discontinued and very few are left.
