I disagree sir. When I got my prius it was a heads up decision between a Ford Focus and a Prius... i computed gas cost over 1, 3, and 5 years. At 3 years, the prius has paid for the increased up front cost in gas savings. For me, it was a purely financial decision. I honestly could care less about my car's impact on the environment.

And when my friends (mostly in their 20s and 30s) give me shit for "driving a vagina" or some other bullshit i just remind them that i get 50+ mpg, pay $30 to fill up, and do it every 400 miles... that shuts them up.

It did for me. When I bought my Prius (used) it was the cheapest car I could find for my situation, including the car my aunt would have given me near free. I worked out all the costs (as near as I could) and a 2007 or 2008 Prius provided the lowest overall cost of any car I could find.

Man, I've never heard of this Prius hate. I live in Torrance and everyone has been congratulating my wife on her new Prius. Are people just drinking a lot of haterade? What's there not to like about a car that is hybrid, reliable (if not, they will take care of you), convenient, it's just a great size for a city car. This thread is really an eye opener haha

I'm surprised. I kept a spreadsheet for almost 2 years running a bunch of different vehicles. I calculated purchase cost, estimated trade in, fuel and scheduled maintenance. The Prius only won a straight financial analysis when gas got over $6/gallon. As I recall, at $4/gallon the winner was either a Honda Fit or a Hyundai accent.
At $2/gallon I'd have been better off (financially) keeping my pickup truck.

I admit I never did an analysis of used cars.

Well, you live in Torrance. Torrance has a stereotype out here of being filled with tofu-wine-and-cheese imbibing Prius drivers. Sooo... you're saying it's pretty accurate. :D

Haha! I love tofu, wine and cheese but probably not the way you're thinking. I love soon tofu (Korean soup dish), any alcohol I can get into my body, and cheesey fries. Not your typical wine and cheese hehe. To be honest, I never drove or rode in a Prius before my wife test drove it and I wasn't blown away or disappointed. It was about what I was expecting. I bought it because I felt like it gave me a good chance to have a car that will be good at the pump, relatively safe, good size and attractive enough that my wife wouldn't feel like I cheaped out on her. Also, it seemed to be a really reliable car that I will be able to drive for over 8 years easily. I just messaged my best friend and he immediately responded with "hipster" and that reminded me of another guy I told I was thinking of buying a Prius and he immediately said "pretentious." I guess people really do think of these things when they think of a Prius.

Personally, I enjoy driving what your friends are so critical of.

I should add that I did my analysis on a used Prius vs a used Focus. I used gas cost at $3.65 and my current mileage of 30,000 per year.

I just got my Prius yesterday and had some friends over. They are definitely in shock and were talking a lot of smack. Then I asked them about their gas mileage, push button start and navigations and they shut up.

I really don't care what others think. Can't wait till my first fill up!

Different numbers, different results - interesting. The most obvious difference is depreciation, but it does point out why spreadsheet predictions are so difficult - it all depends on the assumptions.

I left depreciation out of it. Ideally, I would like to drive my car until it no longer runs and then sell it for whatever I can get.. I don't plan on reselling in x amount of years so depreciation did not factor in for me.

That said, my last car got totaled doing a flip on the highway... but I guess no depreciation there either!
