I am considering the purchase of a 2012 Prius Three. I only have 16,500 miles on my 2010 Prius II and am wondering if it is reasonable to propose to my local dealer $6K along with my car in trade, out the door, to "move up". (I live in Michigan.) Any advice on this would be welcome--thanks! Should mention that I was hoping to include the solar roof panel option in this price.
Why you're moving up? Want the features on the '12 model Three? Want a newer car? Something else? To me, the changes aren't big enough to warrant a change. Heck, I'm still driving my Gen 2. I don't plan to be on the market until Gen 4 comes out.
Mostly because I miss the back-up camera of my 2008 Prius (which my daughter is now driving), as well as some other things they took out of the standard features when the 2012 came out. And my sense is that with the large inventory on most lots, it might be a good time to do this.
Roman numerals were used to describe models for 2010. After that, 2011 onward, packages are named Two, Three, Four and Five. I edited your thread title to avoid confusion, just wanted to let ya' know why I did it.
Didn't want to spend that much on an upgrade. But then, I've not run the numbers to see how much might be saved over the life of the vehicle.
1. Check Blue Book prices to see what your car is worth. I think you have more value in the car than you give yourself credit for. Also with 2013's coming out dealers will be looking to,move 2012's. 2. Go for a Prius III/4 to get features worth upgrading for: Automatic DRL's (they are on PIII/3) Automatic on/off headlights Power seats (many find PIII manual seats uncomfortable) Heads up display (safety feature to keep eyes on the road) Definitely get the solar sun roof. It really works and dresses up the car
Offhand, the $6K + your car seems very low to move to a 2012. Others are right, you can get a better deal on the remaining 2012's with the 2013's so close. There probably won't be much of a change, but they will want to clear them out. I'm happy with my trade-up, the local dealer gave me a decent deal on a trade. I really like the 2012 features, especially the solar roof. The only thing I miss is a little storage space/cup holders, and silver wheels.
Thanks, all. I just purchased a 2013 Prius 3 (base model), got 18,200 for my 2010. They got the color I wanted from another state and were terrific & easy to work with, even though not the closest dealership. I really am happy with the hands-free feature and with getting the back-up camera like I had in my 2008!
