Will the stock lug nuts on my 2012 Prius Four work properly if I mount OEM wheels from my old 2008 Prius with winter tires?
Yikes - I was advised that the gen 2 alloy wheel fit my gen 3 Four and based on that had my snows mounted - is that incorrect? Here is the other thread where the advice I got was that 08 wheels (not tires) fit 2012 vehicle. Could some one reconfirm this????? Will the stock wheels and tires off my 2012 Prius Four fit my 2008? | PriusChat
I've been poking around and everything I have seen puts the bolt pattern at 5 lug 100 mm for BOTH Gen II and Gen III - bisco - could you share where you heard to the contrary?
if you check the spare tire thread in the pip forum, i thought they said you can't use a gen II for a pip spare. i could be wrong, there was a lot of controversy.
If it is incorrect, that is news to me too. I've been wanting a second set of wheels for snow tires, and last fall did consider some Gen2s on craigslist, but didn't act.
You know, I sometimes wonder how lazy people can be. You have the wheels, with or without tyres, try one!!
The wheels will work, as I have test fitted them on mine. The bolt pattern for the Gen II and Gen III is 5x100. The Prius V is 5x114.3 and the Prius C is 4x100.
Look, I'm no mechanic. But, I do put in 60-70 hours a week at work. So lazy is a moniker I find a bit tough to swallow. The problem is I am worried whether I have to use a particular type of lug nut with the 2008 wheels to be safe. Fit is not the issue now that folks that know have chimed in. Lighten up man.
NO. The PIP is a 16 inch wheel, Gen II is a 15 inch wheel. The Gen II doughnut will work on the PIP, I tried it for one block and then back to my house. However I would not recommend it, that inch over the long term could make a difference. I do now have an extra doughnut which I will sell for $35.00, it is a Gen II spare tire. As for the rest of Gen III , I can't say.
I'm not sure what kind of lug nut you are talking about, as long as they tighten up good it should be no problem. The word " Lazy" was inappropriate and most PCers are more diplomatic.
Actually, I am enough of a mechanic to know that there are several different types of lug nuts and it can be unsafe if you use the wrong type. Some have a conical inner surface that mates with a similar conical surface on the wheel (steel wheels I understand require this type of lug nut. Some lug nuts have a washer with a flat surface that mates against a similar flat surface on the wheels - many alloy wheels require this type. There is also the question of the depth of the lug nut and whether it is open or closed. This is serious business actually because in some cases if you use the wrong type lug nuts the wheel could actually break loose. You know, never mind. I'll figure this out somewhere else.
