2005 Toyota Prius, 85,000 miles on the car. Recently changed spark plugs with stock NGK plugs.
I replaced the 12 volt battery today because the old 12 volt battery was reading 9.6 volts with engine shut off. 13.8 volts with car powered up. Long story short.
Easy swap. I have lots of tools and I am a service technician in a Bridgestone/Firestone tire factory. I can work on most anything with no problems.
The car now idles at 1640 RPM as read on my scangaugeII. I have not plugged in my Auto Enginuity program yet but there are no trouble codes that the scangauge can read. My airbag light is on but it was on before I changed the battery. My left Side airbag is unplugged or partially unplugged and I need to search for the plug. Back ON TOPIC. Does anyone know if there is a fix or some way for the car to relearn the proper idle? I also noticed that my Drivers side window Auto up and Auto down feature stopped working. I can read individual sensors with Auto Enginuity if you need numbers.
The 12 volt battery now reads 12.6 volts with the car powered down. I would like to solve this myself if I can help it to keep my money in my pocket and out of the stealership's pocket:sick:
Thank you for any help you can provide.

When you say "idles", do you mean after the car has gone through the full warm-up cycle to S3/S4? When in S1 (and S2?) the engine will "idle" at a higher RPM.

You can reset the auto window just by going all the way down, then all the way up and hold for a couple secs.

Did you run the engine long enough for it to warm up?

What was the idle speed prior to your replacement of the battery?

You might clean the throttle body interior and throttle plate. If that doesn't help, try disconnecting the 12V battery negative cable where it bolts to the body for a few minutes, allowing the ECUs to power down. Then when you reconnect power, maybe the engine ECU will allow normal idle speed.

Ok. Reset the window auto function.
The car will maintain 1520-1540 RPM no matter what temp the coolant is at if I am just stopped or in park it will still idle at the above level. It does it when I start the car and when it is completely warmed up to temp at 185-200. IT NEVER STOPS IDILING! I unplugged the MAF sensor while it was at idle and it ran up slightly then back to normal then it stumbled really bad and shut off. It gave Red triangle of death and red broken car sybol on the MFD. It also gave check engine light. I reset the code for the engine light and red triangle, broken red car symbol on MFD and check engine light went out. I am at a loss here. The MAF reads .85 lb/min when at the 1540 rpm range and TPS reads 12. Any ideas??

Prior to replacing the battery the idle was about 1180-1200 RPM and when I came to a stop it would shut off if HV batt was above 4 bars. If I placed it in park and HV batt was above 4 bars it would also shut off. Now 1520-1540 hot, cold, Park, brake to stop. Downhill for 3/4 mile with speed between 30-32 MPH with 7 bars on HV batt it idles at 2240 rpm range. I am open to any ideas. I can get data with Auto Enginuity. That is how I gave the above MAF reading, RPM's, Temperature, etc. Please Advise.

What are the symptoms if the inverter got toasted with bad polarity on a jump or 12V install?

    It would be dead jim.

OP: Look closely at the Hybrid battery screen. Whats the state of charge doing? Is it bouncing between fully charged and low? Keep an eye on it to see if its getting flaky.

Whats the history on the car? Bought new, used what?

I purchased this car in 2007. It was in a small front end collision and had been repaired when I purchased it. I paid 14K. It had 14,000 miles at the time. I replaced a small coolant hose that had a pinhole leak the second day I owned it and a new MAF. I have done regular oil and filter changes every 5K with fully synthetic. Air filter every 15K. Had transmission oil changed about three months ago at 81k. Look at my signature for the mods done. I haven't changed the coolant because it is long life coolant and I am only at 85K . I have done really good maintenance to this car. I will replace the belt in the next 10K miles. It has run smooth from 14K in 2007 until today with 85K on the odo when I changed my 12V battery. I also changed my spark plugs recently. Is it possible that the PCM needs to be re-flashed at the dealer because I changed the battery? The HV battery level was getting drained quickly just at idle in the drive way but charges up just fine if I drive it two or three miles. It is not bouncing...but draining slowly sitting in driveway with idle at 1540 RPM. It is not all over the place. It just started the idle problem when I put the optima yellow top made for prius with the small post. With the HV batt at 7 bars in the green, the idle will not shut off is what puzzles me. Any way to do a load test of the HV battery. I have an EV button but have used it only a few times when I wash and wax my car and only want to move a few feet. I installed the button in 2008 and very little use. I guess it is possible that the HV batt can be getting to end of life. What HV batt are people using for this car when thiers fail or start going bad? I am not ruling anything out.

First thing that comes to mind is check the 12v battery. It may be bad. Put a charger on it and see how much current its consuming and how long it takes to charge. On my new Optima it pulls 5 amps at the instant start and within 5 mins its fully charged 0 draw in 2 amp mode.

Also when you replaced the hose was that on the Inverter tank? If so there may be air in the Inverter coolant system and the Inverter is overheating. In READY open the Invert tank and look inside for turbulence and good flow/movement of the fluid in the tank. Then listen to the pump located behind the drivers headlight. Wait till engine shuts off in ready so its quiet under the hood. Should be soft whine not gurgling. then feel the Inverter. Should be very warm but not hot.
Btw, there's a service campaign on replacing all Gen II coolant pumps. Was yours replaced?

But the car is not throwing any codes though. If you do start to suspect the Hybrid battery to rule the battery out is take it to the dealer and they hook techstream laptop up and they take it for a ride and check battery soc , delta and balance and charging.
They can tell real quick if the battery module is having any issues. They charge $125 diag fee. Also its important if any codes are captured you report them here so we can help.

    edthefox5,

I know you've been here a long time & you're a valued contributor with many posts, but I must make just 2 minor corrections to your 2nd paragraph. First, the OP isn't going to have any quiet under the hood, since he explained that his engine is ALWAYS idling & WON'T shut off. And 2nd, the service campaign to replace the inverter coolant pump is only for 2004 through PART of the 2007 model years (NOT all of the 2G's).

    Hi Dwayne,

If you don't see the traction battery SOC gauge quickly moving up and down, I would not list the traction battery as an immediate suspect.

Is the air conditioner compressor turned off, when you are making these observations about engine idle speed? If no, then turn off the AC and see what happens.

I would recommend disconnecting the battery while cleaning the throttle body then seeing what happens. When the battery is disconnected the settings go back to that of a new, clean engine and throttle body which will make the engine run weird if it is dirty. Either way the settings will re-learn in time.

How long is "time" in these cases? a day of driving, a week, or more? I recently replaced my 12V with an optima yellow top, without trying to preserve the settings and everything seemed to be good after about 100 yds.

    What is engine/cooler temperature reading?
May be the temperature sensor is bad and ECU thinks the engine is still cold.

I just took in my 2005 Prius for a fuel injection, oil change, and tune-up. I haven't yet replaced the battery. How is that replaced? Do auto shops do that or the dealer? Does a reputable shop check for this? I'm assuming so now. About 4 years ago at a dealer, in all they said was "wait and see" because they had never changed the battery yet themselves and didn't know how long they would last. I hear getting a fuel injection increases mileage? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! I haven't needed to replace brakes or anything else that costs a lot. My fuel injection will cost $140. That's the most I've paid for any type of service besides the tune-up/oil change.

the battery can be replaced by anybody. you are going to need one soon, so it might be a good idea to do so preventatively. you can get toyota original or optima aftermarket. prices with labor run from $150. - $300. all the best!

I suppose you mean that the fuel injectors will be cleaned. If you have not noticed any driveability problems and buy a decent gasoline brand, there is no need for that service.

The thing fuel injection cleanings clean the most is your wallet. I recommend putting a bottle of Techron concentrate in once in a while, maybe after oil changes. You can get 14 bottles of Techron for the same amount of the wallet cleaning. Watch out for wallet flushes as well!

Could be a few seconds or a few days. The point is that they will re-learn themselves.
