Help with Prius Plug in or Prius

    Hi everyone.
    I need a new car.
    I have driven the Prius and the PiP. Enjoyed both. I could see myself in both.
    Should gov. incentive 2500, 0% financing, Maryland 6% tax reimbursed, and Toyota financial 2000 cash make this a good deal?

    I drive 16 miles to work, no charging station at my work.

    My energy co. charges 6.25 Cents a kWh?

    Am I over analyzing this? less gas, saves money, emmissons, and fits all the kids....

    Which should I go for?

    Is your 16 miles to work in each direction or round trip? If it's round trip, go test drive a Volt. You can go round trip without plugging in and may get by without putting gasoline in for months, or years. The current leases are pretty aggressive, probably less than $10/day if you only drive 32 miles a day.

    so you'll get to work all electric and come home in hybrid mode. then you'll learn how to use half your electric in the most efficient way on the way to work and the same on the way home for best efficiency overall.

    I live on an island and use ev nearly 60 percent of the time. If the ev range were 50 or 100 I would have bought the car but ended up leasing it hoping that any newer models' ev range increases in 3 years. Lease worked better for me. Definitely plug in over regular any way you look at it.

    And your electricity is dirt cheap! I'm at $0.15 a kwh

    Well the base plug in comes close to a Prius II or III price after incentives and includes more stuff as well as the EV range and carpool stickers here in CA. I'd go for a PiP

    if they are only paying $0.0625 /kwh I don't think they are in CA. :)

    Yes one of them. Gas is 4.70 a gallon so much cheaper to use EV and access solar canopy charging at the grocery store.

    If you had 40 miles of EV range what would your EV% jump to?

    I am at about 83%, mainly because my son was driving all over the place all summer till he went back to college. I get almost free charges powered by wind turbines, $25/6 months unlimited.

    Hi Maryland driver, but I would be shocked if you are paying 6 cents/kwhr for elec.
    We here in NoVA are paying 12 cent/kwhr and we are one of the cheapest in the DelMarVa region.
    Anyways it is up to you on PiP plug-in. I assume you are paying more for the vehicle it probably will not pay out. Lots of folks get them because (1) some states (CA) give car pool HOV lane access to PiP's but not hybrids (I do not think MD fits in this category) or (2) they are big supporters of plug-in technology, either out of interest or some people feel petroleum is a bad thing. So if the shoes fits...otherwise Prius liftback or v wagon are fine options.

    Probably 95% EV with that range. Wind Power would be nice or solar on the garage. For now the electricity is mostly drawn from the grid at an expense.

    if you want to see how much energy your drive to/from work would take you can put your route into this tool and see what it would be. I think the PiP looks pretty close to the Leaf in EV mode.

    if you want to use the tool with a Volt, add the "Opel Ampera" (european version of the Volt)

    make sure you put in 2.7 kwh for battery size if you're testing a PIP

    Yes, maybe less. Some say charging lasts about 2.5 / 2.75 hours!

    With the Volt, a full charge (about 40 miles) is about 12kwh, so @ 6.25 that would be 75 cents a day with some spare miles every day, and NO gasoline, unless you decide to take a road trip, and then you can run in hybrid mode like the Prius.
