This was a procedure that could be done on the Generation II ( possibly others too ) Could this be done on the PIP? If so, for what purpose and how?
Not sure what you mean, But I know at gas station somepeople try to fill gas till it overflows a bit.
If you are talking about recharging the EV range, I do it on occasion. First, I find it works better if you are almost out of EV range. Now, put the PiP in "HV" mode, speed up before cresting a hill, when going down the hill, or losing elevation put the PiP back in "EV" mode and coast down the incline/hill.. I do this on the congested expressway on the way into Boston in the mornings, where the terrain permits.
Force Charging (reving up the ICE while holding the brake on to prevent movement) is 'useful' if you need maximum battery charge and do not care about MPG. Car and Driver force charged the Land Speed Record Prius, no one was going to worry about MPG, they wanted maximum top speed. Force Charging can be used to make sure two Prius are identical for a test, both are maxed out. While I suspect you can do it on a PiP, why? (I bought my Prius to save petroleum for future generations, if your reason does not include using less gas, my logic may be moot)
I would use FC when I was going to leave the car parked for a protracted time, to insure a healthy HV battery. It worked great and never affected my mpgs.
I don't know if it is something recent, but I thought that pressing down on the brake and accelerator at the same time will result in the Prius (plug-in and standard) control system thinking there is something bad happening like a jammed accelerator pedal, and disable the accelerator pedal.
IIRC, Toyota added the accelerator override in response to the unintended acceleration debacle. Anyhow, I remember trying force charging in my Gen 2 a different way (holding down the brake and accelerator sounds very awkward and would be something I have reservations about doing). I think you can forced charge by putting the car in park and pressing the accelerator.
Not true, you should not post it if you havn't proved it. This discussion went on over 5 years ago, it is in the archives.
I was only referring to what could be done on Gen II. If you tried to step on the accelerator and brake at the same time while driving, nothing will be accomplished, I know, I tried it eight years ago.
I have a good friend with a substantial indoor garage and recreation room below his primary living area. He doesn't want to have the ICE come on while inside so he reserves EV capacity for getting in and out of the garage. For his ICE only vehicles, he rolls them in/out using an electric tug.
You should take your own advice. I prefaced my post appropriately with IIRC. Meanwhile, testing out on a Gen 2 is irrelevant because the brake override was added in the Gen 3 sometime after the 2010 Prius started shipping. A quick Google search shows there are numerous articles about this in 2010, not "over 5 years ago". And I have no intention trying this out, much like I don't intend to try out the airbags.
I think it was posted somewhere on PriusChat that modern cars (not just hybrids) have such low emissions that the old classic of committing carbon monoxide suicide by running the car in a closed garage won't work any more. Like ryogajyc, I have no intention of testing this claim
IIRC there was a somewhat recent video of Wayne having some guy FC. It was on a Gen3 but I would think the same method would work on a PiP.
I don't think he is concerned about carbon monoxide in particular. He doesn't care for any of the emmisions from an ICE inside the garage.
