Fog Light in Rear of Prius V??

hvanwersch, any info on getting the rear foglight on a PriusV? I am in that boat now. :-/ Need to take my car to Belgium.

 

I had it on a Volvo, and the point is that the fog light is on even when your brake lights are not, meaning you are more visible when driving down the road without using the brakes.

hvanwersch and others in this thread have the Prius Five liftbacks, not the Prius v wagon. An easy mod for the Prius liftback is to retrofit the Valenti taillight with a rear fog lamp (which robby3 has done). However, Valenti doesn't make a taillight for the Prius v wagon.

 

If you're going to Europe with your vehicle because you're in the military, then they will often do the modification for you. Often the wiring is there or can be modified easily, sometimes they replace the US rear lights with Euro versions (if your car is sold here that is) which often include the rear fog light. The benefit of this system is that when you return home with the car you just put your old US market rear lights back in. Another cheaper system is to add a stand alone rear fog light on the back of the car with an add on switch on your dash. Whilst cheap it looks awful and the bolt on lamp can often get broken off in a car wash or similar.

One other word of warning. Many US market rear lights use the brake lamps as turn signals OR the turn signal is red instead of orange. This will be a fail as turn signals here must be orange (at least for cars made after 1956 or something). So you can either replace the rear light unit with a euro version including the orange turn signal AND rear fog or you have the reverse lamps coloured orange and then have an after market reverse lamp and rear fog lamp bolted on under your bumper. The latter does look dreadful on modern cars.

Close up of my RHD rear fog light. It is much brighter than a brake lamp though the viewing angle is very tight. The reverse lamp is on the other side. Swap this round for LHD European countries.

 

Yes we are military. I was just told by several people already in Brussels (NATO/SHAPE) that if their car was new, that they didn't have inspection and the fog light wasn't needed until the car was 4 years old. They do the installs of the fog light there, but they are the "kits". I guess we will figure something out when the time comes. I so appreciate the information and the picture! That really helps.
