Howdy all, Looking to reduce the 4x4 offroad ride height off my PiP. Was curious if anyone had messed with lowering yet. Had planned to go full coil overs but don't feel like dropping $800-$1k at the moment. I can still get my employee discount at the Toyota dealer I used to work for...think I will throw a set of plus springs on it and see what happens, curious to see what the added weight does. Also coming soon either bronze or gray wheels
No one that has publicly claimed to do so, not on PC anyway. But there does seem to be some interest. I have a set of Tein Super Streets waiting for me when I have the time. I was concerned with the added weight on lowering springs, since the extra 100 lbs is all in the back.
Hmmm...a lowrider PIP...I just finished 'pimping' my PIP with all my add-on stuff, but I think that's it for me.
Given the higher weight in the rear compared to a non-PiP I would not use the Plus springs. I would find a spring with a higher tension rate which is progressive like the Eibach ProKit. The Plus springs, IMO are too soft. This is VERY noticeable when going over speed bumps and the nice person end bounces. I can only imagine it would be worse in a PIP. I would also try and find out if your OE PIP springs have a higher spring rate than the non-PIP.
Current plan is to use tein h techs. The plus springs tend to sag the rear already, not a hood place to start. I had tein springs on my 2010 and it sat higher in the rear then in the front, hope it will balance well with PiP. If not a will install rear spring spacers. Tein springs can be had for $136 so I'm not out a whole lot if this turns into a disaster.
I asked in a new thred if anyone could get the Toyota part numbers on Gen 3 springs vs Plug in Springs ( Gen III vs PiP Springs part # anyone? | PriusChat ). I have a feeling the springs are the same. If they are my plan was to order up the Prius Plus springs and toss them in over the weekend. I also saw the like Rav4 front swaybar was like 1mm larger and could be had for under 100$. I just sold my turbo from my race car so I got 780$ burning a hole in my paypal account that the wife does not know about!
The spring design is as far as I know the same, however spring rates are supposed to higher on pip vs regular 2012. I ordered tein springs today, will keep everyone posted. Compared ride height today with a 2011, pip sits 3/4" higher in front and 1" higher in rear then a non lowered 2011. Putting lowering springs on pip could get interesting, could see huge drop from just springs, which I am perfectly fine with.
I didn't know the PiP was actually higher than a no-plug Prius. I've thought it to myself when I saw other Prius, but I thought it was just my imagination. Thanks for the confirmation.
confirming the part numbers from the Plugin springs to the Gen III springs would answer the question. I called my dealership today and the parts guy was no help at all. He basically had the "if you are not going to order something don't call" attitude.

So my conclusion is the front is identical but the rear is a different part number. So that leads us to assume the spring rates are identical in the front but potentially different in the rear.
Yes this is what I found out today also. I've had my PiP for only 3 weeks now, put a XPEL Ultimate clear bra in the front, next was tint, lowering, then wheels, and powder coat wheels, this was going to be my fixed up commuter car. Now I have to call and bug Tanabe or Eibach to come up with a kit for PiP. They are both local here but Tanabe's Japan reps only come out a few times a year. Like many others in Southern California I just bought it for continued single occupant carpool lane usage.
It's only about 50lbs more per corner in the rear. I really don't see it making much of a difference at all. I actually have the TRD springs sitting in my garage with the rear sway bar but because of this heat we have had the past few weeks, I have been way to lazy to install them. Maybe I'll knock it out this weekend. The rear looks to be a joke to do and the front not bad at all. I have a local alignment shop I trust that can clean up the front end after they are in.
Hi Totmacher, So you're going to do it yourself? And (what nobody, not even the R&D specialist at Eibach could tell me) is the rear fitment the same as a regular 2010 and up Prius? (Shocks and Springs) How much would you charge to install mine? If you can confirm the rears for the 2010 Prius kit will fit on our PiP then Iwill get the Tanabe coilover kit. (no kidding - heat wave making me do nothing but spend time in my pool.)
Yeah. I was wondering if you had a chance to try this out as well this weekend? Curious to see if the extra battery weight would be supported.
Well the Solar guys called me up Friday to install the Solar Power this coming Wednesday, so that threw a kink in my plans as I spent all weekend clearing out my garage. The springs should be relatively simple. I'll gladly help anyone else or do it for them. My wife has an 2011 and from what I could tell visuslly looking and paroosing the parts list the rear springs are all that was really different. I'll probably hook up the 3D GoPro and do a timelapse of the process.
Was wondering if you have a chance to install the springs... Also, am curious how big of a solar system you got for your roof?
